Makeup artist (MUA) Ariel Tejada is the magic behind Kylie Jenner’s iconic looks. Tejada, known as Kylie Jenner’s makeup artist and @makeupbyariel on Instagram, has over 2 million followers and an impressive clientele list. Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian West, the rest of the Kar-Jenner clan, Shay Mitchell and Desi Perkins are just a few of the celebrities Ariel works with.1 The celeb MUA has spilled some of his tips and tricks in various makeup tutorials.
1. Favorite Brush
Ariel mentioned his favorite foundation and concealer brush in a YouTube makeup tutorial with actress Shay Mitchell.
“There’s nothing that blends better than this brush,” he said.

2. Brows First
The makeup artist always starts with the eyebrows because they frame and shapes the face, laying guidelines for the rest of the makeup look. Ariel likes to fill in the top of the eyebrow darker than the bottom to give it a more natural effect. He uses the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz.

3. Set Brows With Setting Powder
With a thick blending brush, he lightly pats the Laura Mercier translucent setting powder right over the eyebrow. This softens and sets the brow, ensuring the filled-in brow does not look too harsh and stays in place all day.

4. “Lip Injections” With Lip Liner
Ariel creates the effect of fuller, plumper lips using a lip liner tinted slightly darker than the lip color. Starting at the corners of the lips, Ariel first lines over the actual lips. As he gets closer to the cupid’s bow, he starts to slightly over-line the lips, to create a somewhat pouty look.
“It should just be right above the lip line. Follow your same lip shape, but bigger,” he says.
The same technique applies to the bottom lip: stay close to your lip line on the outer corners, then slightly over-line as you move toward the center. Next, fill in the outside corners of the actual lip. This creates a shadow so that the center of the lip is the focal point. Optional: clean up the lines using concealer on the outer corners of the lip liner.
5. Color Matching Foundation
The MUA matches foundation to the chest instead of the face. Since the face and the chest can be slightly different colors, Ariel swatches foundation on the chest because “you don’t want a floating head.”
6. Favorite Drugstore Foundation
“Maybelline Fit Me is an incredible foundation,” he says. The product comes in a matte + poreless finish (typically for oily skin) and a dewy + smooth finish (typically for dry skin). The best part: the product retails for only $7.99.

7. Secret Weapon for Photo-Ready Skin
After finishing Kim Kardashian West’s face makeup and eye shadow, Ariel dusts her under-eyes with the Chanel Finishing Powder in “Rose Clair.”
He says, “This is for camera, don’t do this everyday. It’s stunning and it photographs incredibly.”

8. Mascara Tips
Ariel starts by curling the lashes.
“You always want to make sure you curl your lashes. It opens the eyes and gives you a more awake look,” he says.
For top lashes, he lightly pulls up the eyelid and starts coating from the base. For the bottom lashes, he takes the front tip of the mascara wand, holding it vertically and pulling it down through lashes to lengthen them. Here’s the mascara he has used on Kim Kardashian West:

9. Add Oil to Foundation
“Adding a face oil to foundation helps the foundation glide easier and makes the look more daytime-friendly,” Ariel says.
He mixes a small dot of the Tatcha Gold Camellia Beauty Oil with liquid foundation on the back of his hand before applying it to the face.

10. Highlighter Placement
While highlighting Shay Mitchell’s face, Ariel noted that highlighter is often placed incorrectly (a mistake he himself used to make, he admits). He says that highlighter should be placed on top of the cheekbone, which is actually closer to the hairline than it is to under the eyes.
