A wise icon from one of our favorite 2000s rom-coms once said, “I think all of us want to feel something that we’ve forgotten or turned our backs on…Because maybe we didn’t realize how much we were leaving behind.” Jenna Rink was onto something.
As we become older, it’s expected to let go of our childhood and “grow up.” It’s super stressful. If you’re struggling to get by, here are some nostalgic warm weather activities to give you a little magic from your childhood that you may be needing.
1. Ice Cream
Two ice cream cones; both for yourself. What? There’s nothing that ice cream can’t fix. Going out to get some ice cream is something that you will never be too old for! It is an easy way to treat yourself and make your afternoon worthwhile. Stop by your local ice cream shop or pick up a tub, sit outside and relax for a few minutes. This will never let you down.
2. Playground it Up
You can’t tell us that this isn’t calling out to your inner child! Going back to an old, childhood playground with a friend can be exhilarating. Play on the swings, go down the slide and play freeze tag. Stopping by a playground is one of the best ways to have a good time and get in some laughs!
3. Jump Rope and Chalk!
Continuing with the recess theme, get your sidewalk chalk out and make a hopscotch outline or a chalk maze. It’s a fun, therapeutic way to release some creative energy. Or, if you’re looking to get in some exercise, try to learn new tricks on jump rope. Time will fly! Blow some bubbles while you’re at it, and make a wish on a dandelion the next time you see one. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that bring us the most joy.
4. Fly a Kite
Purchase a kite from Amazon.com, or pick one up at the store if you don’t have one! Flying a kite with friends in the afternoon is a fun way to hang out and relax while doing an activity that will make you smile. Watching the colors soar and hanging out with friends can easily lift your spirits plus it gives you a reason to go outside.
5. Catch Fireflies in a Jar
It’s that time of year: muggy summer nights and catching fireflies. All you really need is a clear jar with a pierced lid to let in air, and a moistened paper towel to keep the air in the jar humid. If you want to go full on, getting a butterfly net or a bug house is another way to make the most out of your night. Make sure you handle the fireflies gently and release them afterwards.
6. Make a Music Video
Ok, hear us out: we know this sounds silly, but that’s exactly why it’s fun. If you didn’t try to make music videos when you were younger, you have been seriously missing out. VALLEY recommends Video Star an app where you can fulfill all your rockstar fantasies. Play dress up, sing and go wild. You know how it goes; you’re a star!
7. Floaties!
There’s no better way to cool down than to turn on the sprinkler at your house, full up a kiddy pool or invest in some giant pool floats. If you have access to a pool, gather some friends, eat some popsicles and have fun in the water with your giant flamingo.
No matter what stage of life you’re going into, carry your childhood with you and remember to stay silly, find happiness in little things and live life to the fullest. If you try any of these activities, we want to hear from you!
