Anyone who has scrolled through the stand-up comedy section of Netflix has likely seen a picture of a small Asian woman with a brightly patterned dress, big glasses and a huge, pregnant belly. This is Ali Wong. You may remember seeing this spectacle multiple times because she does, in fact, have two specials. In 2016 the first, “Ali Wong: Baby Cobra” came out and became a smash hit. Then, in 2018 “Ali Wong: Hard Knock Wife” released to an equal success. The catch is that in both specials she is pregnant with a different child. She centers the majority of her comedy around her pregnancy and motherhood.
Just a year ago, most people probably wouldn’t recognize Wong’s name, but she has now become a household name with the premier of her Netflix Original Movie, “Always Be My Maybe.” She acted alongside Reanu Reeves, Daniel Dae Kim and Randall Park in the rom-com. With all of the movie buzz, Wong’s Netflix stand-up specials have skyrocketed in popularity and acclaim.
Before Wong’s success in comedy and film, she had a regular job just like the rest of us. She was a writer for the sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat.” She joked about this with Ellen when she revealed that she still does not have a Netflix account to watch all of her programs. She laughed that she was “so poor for so long” that she is still extremely frugal with her money.
In a 2018 interview, Ellen asked her if she would ever consider having more kids, and she was quick to shut it down. She said that with the two C-sections and being a mom of two young girls, “she has struggled enough.” Although she constantly makes jokes about her girls, she always brings them on tour with her and loves them very much.
Wong is also releasing her first novel soon. On October 15, “Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets, and Advice For Living Your Best Life” will be available to the public. It is said to be a collection of letters written for her two daughters about a myriad of lessons she learned in her personal life. Just two days after the release of her book, on October 17, she will be performing at the Met in Philadelphia at 9:30 p.m. This is the last show on her tour that is not sold out, so get your tickets soon! You surely will not regret it. If you don’t catch it in person, keep an eye out on Netflix for another special!
