A New Era of Perfume- The Rise of Sol De Janeiro

As Generation Z gives way to Generation Alpha, many are veering from the previous choice of Bath & Body Works and switching to Sephora. Seen frequently on TikTok or in stores, more and more kids are choosing to shop at the popular makeup store. This shift highlights a contrast from previous generations that favored Bath & Body Works as some of the newest and most purchased items in perfume are from the brand Sol de Janeiro.

These brightly colored bottles, filled with vibrant, summery scents, have been taking the internet by storm. Like the body mists from Bath & Body Works, they offer a long-lasting fragrance but with a refreshing twist. From having only around four scents in the previous years, their viewership has skyrocketed, leading them to create two more scents and a handful of exclusive limited-time products.

With the recent release of Sol de Janeiro’s Delisia Drench (#59) and After Hours (#76), with notes of vanilla orchid, sugared violet, and sheer sandalwood, the brand has been taking a new approach. Unlike the previous years that focused on summery scents such as their OG Brazilian Bum Bum, Beija Flor and Summer E Amor, these new fragrances offer a change from the norm attracting a wider range of customers.

Bath and Body Works has been long known and esteemed for its wide variety of scents. This includes many seasonal fragrances that transcend several scents. These include anything from fresh summer options, cozy winter ones and, most popularly, their fall musky scents.

While Bath & Body Works has been praised for a wide variety of options, with Sol de Janiero’s new additions of Delisia Drench and Bom Dia Bright, they include these musky scents that the brand was previously missing out on. This along with a growing range of products that vary from perfume, hair oils, to even sunscreen has expanded its customer base.

Bath and Body Works has been a staple for decades, famously known for its extensive range of products from candles, lotions, perfumes and even sanitizers. For years, Bath and Body Works went unmatched for middle school girl’s top choice in fragrance products. However, with changing times, shoppers are increasingly shifting their attention over to places like Victoria’s Secret and Sephora.

While a huge plus is the variety of scents, a large drawback is the availability and accessibility. Consumers do not come across the products much as the only places where you can buy are in-store or through their website.

Comparing the Two

As many grew up being large fans of Bath and Body Works’ esteemed body mists, it is bittersweet to see them go. However, seeing the variety of scents that are being released today that offer unique and different experiences than Bath and Body Works Japanese Cherry Blossom or Beautiful Day, there is much-needed variation for the incoming generations.

Although Bath and Body Works will be forever praised for products like their Pocketbac hand sanitizers, their body mists seem to be losing popularity. As Sol de Janeiro gains traction in stores such as Sephora, Ulta, Kohls and Target, Bath and Body Works risks fading out of relevancy unless it begins to branch out.

Meanwhile, Sol de Janiero’s body mists continue to gain praise and grow in popularity. Will Sol de Janeiro remain the most popular perfume or will it fade just as Bath and Body Works before it? Only time will tell.
