Bring back the reign of King Kylie

The year 2016 rings clear in my mind. My mom and I drove on the coastal highway heading to Malibu for brunch blasting “One Dance” by Drake, which had just been released that summer. I had just graduated from fifth grade and couldn’t wait for my first year of middle school.

Chokers and Class

To this day, it’s still talked about, people miss 2016. Not just the music, or watching YouTube constantly or the immaculate vibes. Specifically, it’s the fashion. This California trip holds a core memory for me: my first crop top.

It was from Tilly’s at the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. I will never forget it. This was a pivotal moment for me–suddenly, I could be stylish. I also got a black lace choker that paired perfectly with the black cropped baby tee. At the time, I felt like the most stylish person on earth.

But I wasn’t, Kylie Jenner was. She was the king of style in 2016: King Kylie. Everything about Jenner’s King Kylie era is iconic. From the turquoise hair to the 10 Cartier love bracelets stacked on each of her arms, she was a legend.

And now that skinny jeans are trying to make a comeback, why not King Kylie too? In Jenner’s most recent profile picture across social media platforms, she has pink hair, teasing her loyal subjects that have waited for King Kylie to make her return and reign again.

During Jenner’s initial time in the palace, King Kylie was arguably the most influential person on social media. Everything she’d post, everything she’d wear and everything she’d buy would immediately be in the spotlight (and with good reason). Vine and Snapchat were the world’s inside look on Jenner’s wild, carefree, teenage life at the time. Everyone was infatuated by her and her closet.

Every post on Jenner’s Instagram featured dark, edgy clothing and hypebeast brands like Supreme. The classic look was a dark hoodie paired with dark, ripped skinny jeans and neon high tops to top it off. Her hair was always in tight, 22-inch French braids, of course.

A New Era

Jenner always had a trick or two up her Bape hoodie’s sleeve. For example, Coachella 2016, when she floored the internet with her rhinestone evil-eye two-piece that left little to the imagination. It was bright, vibrant and a different vibe than what she usually went for at the time.

She continues to give us a taste of her majesty occasionally, like at the 2019 Met Gala when she pulled out a show-stopping, bright orange, feathered Versace dress. It’s obvious that the internet will forever miss Jenner’s King Kylie era and her ability to get creative and express herself through her style.
