Grammy winner pop-star Chappell Roan debuted her first ever country song, “The Giver,” on March 13, and fans are obsessed. Of course in true Chappell fashion, this song isn’t just your average country song.

“The Giver” Analysis
“The Giver” incorporates traditional country song elements, but the lyrics tell a different story. The main theme behind Roan’s new song is that men don’t know how to treat women like women do.
Roan sings about not having a lifted truck or deer antlers hanging on her wall, but she knows how to “get the job done,” saying that she doesn’t need the flashy things men have in order to attract a woman.
Even though this song may sound different, it has the same feminist and queer themes as the rest of her music.

“The Giver” Promo
Over the past few months, Roan has been teasing the new single by dressing up as many male-dominated professions. Roan has posted on Instagram and posted billboards of her dressed as a dentist, lawyer, plumber and more, signifying that she doesn’t need a man to do these jobs.
Roan actually debuted “The Giver” as a musical guest performer on an episode of “Saturday Night Live” in Nov. 2024. Since the song’s release, it already has over 27 million streams on Spotify.

Chappell Roan and Her Country Music Ties
In an Instagram post promoting the song, Roan said that country music will always have a special place in her heart since that’s what she grew up listening to in Missouri. Although Roan did clarify that she will not be releasing a country album.
“May the classic country divas lead their genre, I am just here to twirl and do a little gay yodel for y’all,”

Although Roan’s other music has been in the pop genre, her music has always included country themes. “Pink Pony Club” from the album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” can be interpreted as the struggle of moving away from her Midwest home and traditions to live out her dreams in California.
In another Instagram post, Roan said that it was scary releasing a country song when she has only released pop songs, but praises country music and the other country artists who have come before her. She also urged her fans to give country music a shot, even if it is different from what they listen to.
