Rom-coms tell stories and demonstrate archetypes in friendships and relationships. You know Andie Anderson from How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, but who remembers her chronically single friend Michelle? The chronically single friend is always alone, can’t keep a relationship to save their life and they stay firmly in their independent era. Being chronically single is not always how movies and social expectations portray it to be as a big tragedy. The chronically single friend is an asset to every friend group.
What It Means To Be Chronically Single
You or your friend is chronically single but it doesn’t mean they are incapable of falling in love. Often, the chronically single friend loves love and will talk about relationships with their friends. Dating is either not their priority or they have really high standards. They don’t always view being single as something that needs fixing in their lives.
The chronically single friend thrives in their own ways. They are the designated therapists of the group, the ones who will accompany you to any plan and they don’t have to worry about getting annoyingly hit on at the bars. The contrast of the chronically single friend is the serial dater. The serial dater is always in a relationship and while the serial dater of the group is too busy with their relationships, the chronically single friend is the one who will listen to you 10 minute long voice memos and offer you the best relationship advice. The chronically single friend is often the most supportive and will be your biggest hype man in any situation.
Rom Coms Do It Best
The main character in every rom com gets most of the attention, but there’s always that one friend that’s in the background who is supportive and funny. In How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, that’s Michelle who cries over a guy who ghosted her. In 27 Dresses while Jane is hopelessly in love, Casey is the bold single friend who tells her straight up what she thinks. While these two characters are not the ones falling grandly in love, they play essential roles in the movies. The chronically single friend in the movies is always there to cheer up their friends and give them tough advice.

Invest Your Time Wisely
If you find yourself being the chronically single friend, don’t feel bad about it! There is so many great things about being single. Being chronically single gives you time to date yourself and find comfort in your independence. Instead of spending nights on awkward first dates, you can stay in and watch a movie or take yourself out on a nice date. Being single is just an excuse to invest time in yourself and fall deeply in love with who you are.
Relationships take up a lot of your time and finding balance to spend time with friends and your partner can get difficult. Being single allows you to value your friendships more and form stronger bonds with them. You have the rest of your life to be in a serious relationship, but you’re only in your 20’s once. VALLEY recommends to enjoy this single era and either date yourself instead or be the best friend your group needs.
