Disrupting Industries, Dividing Opinions: Elon Musk

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and largest Trump campaign benefactor, now serves as the Head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). What appears to be a rapid rise to prominence has been preceded by achievements in the technology sector, a controversial past and a growing influence in global affairs.

Musk’s Early Life and Education

Born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1971, Elon Musk fled the country at 17 to avoid military service for the apartheid regime. Musk settled in Canada after obtaining citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, who is Canadian. He attended Queen’s University in Ontario for two years before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and economics in 1997. Musk began graduate school at Stanford University but dropped out after a few days to focus on being a businessman.

Wealth, Power, and Controversy

One of the lingering debates surrounding Musk’s past is whether his father, Errol Musk, owned an emerald mine in Zambia. Errol asserts that he owned a mine in Zambia and that he and his teenage sons, Elon and Kimbal, would sell emeralds in places like New York’s Fifth Avenue. He also claims to have imported raw emeralds into South Africa and had even exchanged a plane for a supply of emeralds.

Elon has repeatedly denied these claims, tweeting that he would offer one million Dogecoin to anyone who could prove the existence of the mine. The debate centers on concerns about wealthy white men potentially exploiting Africa’s resources and whether Elon Musk inherited his wealth, an idea he consistently denies.

The Foundations of Fortune

Alongside his brother Kimbal, Elon co-founded the software company Zip2, which was then acquired in 1999 by Compaq. Shortly after, Musk co-founded X.com which was later formed into PayPal, in 2002 eBay acquired the company for $1.5 billion. That same year, Musk gained U.S. citizenship and founded SpaceX, a spaceflight services company, with the money from the sale of PayPal.

Musk’s Role in Tesla’s Growth

Despite common belief, Elon Musk did not create Tesla. The company was started in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning who had envisioned a long-range electric sports car.

Musk became an early investor and later joined the board and by 2008 had taken over as CEO.

Musk led Tesla through financial struggles and into its status as a leader in the electric vehicle industry, a period that began the misconception that he created the brand. A lawsuit between Eberhard and Musk resulted in a settlement allowing him to call himself a co-founder.

The Twitter/X Transformation

In 2022, Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion with the intent to promote free speech and overhaul the platform’s content moderation. Once in control, he rebranded it as “X” in 2023 intending to craft it into an “everything app” like China’s WeChat.

Leadership under Musk brought praise for his changes, as well as, criticism for mass layoffs and the platform’s new lack of regulation. To many, his ownership of X raises questions about the power of billionaires over global communication and media.

Musk’s Mission to Modernize Government

Musk has taken on an unexpected role in government as the Head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

As a Senior Advisor to the president, the new position is intended to cut “unnecessary” spending and staffing with Elon as an efficiency czar. As per the executive order instating the department, their goal is to “modernize Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity”.

Reform or Overreach?

Three former Musk employees have taken top positions at the Office of Personnel Management, an office that first created a government-wide email system that sent an offer to millions of federal workers with the option to resign with pay until September, an illegal act.

In breaking news, the head of DOGE now has a private security team granted protections similar to those of federal law enforcement. Amid a surge in death threats targeting Musk, the U.S. Marshals Service has enhanced his team’s security measures. This development has led some to question the true extent of Musk’s influence in Washington, D.C.

Still, Elon Musk’s new role in the Trump administration has led to copious debate regarding Tesla’s global expansion. Musk met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Feb. 13 amid speculation about Tesla’s entry into the Indian market even though President Trump has made it clear that he does not support Tesla’s manufacturing expansion in India.
