All moved in and ready to decorate your new place? Whether it be an East Halls dorm or a new apartment in The Legacy, Valley has some DIY (do-it-yourself) decorating ideas for you! If you’ve ever taken a peek at Pinterest and wondered how those beautiful masterpieces are even made, then you are not alone. Thanks to some artsy ladies on campus who were willing to share their secrets, we learned how to make some great DIY decorations.
If you’re looking for some new bedroom inspiration, you should start by choosing a color palette that works best with your comforter. Once your color scheme is selected, it’s time to get to work! The first DIY idea we are head-over-heels for are wall canvases. All you need are some blank canvases and creativity. Grab some paints, wooden letters, sparkles or scrapbook paper and get started.
Scrapbooking
Below is one idea on how to decorate a blank canvas. Senior, Maggie Tabacchi, created a beautiful set of wall art and she was willing to share how:
Step 1: Take 1 piece of scrapbook paper and cut it up into little pieces
Step 2: Mod-podge (glue them) them to the canvas
Step 3: Cut out stencils of birds on different scrapbook paper and glue them on
Step 4: Set to dry
Our second DIY idea we love are hanging tissue paper balls. Here’s how:
Step 1: Take 8-10 pieces of tissue paper for a large ball (5-6 for a small ball)
Step 2: Accordion fold all the tissue paper
Step 3: Tie it in the middle with dental floss or wire
Step 4: Fan the paper out to create a flower-like ball
Origami
Our last DIY idea we can’t take our eyes off of are the scrapbook paper origami’s.
Step 1: For a large circle origami, take 2-3 large scrapbook sheets and cut them in half
Step 2: Accordion fold all the paper
Step 3: Staple them all together in a straight line, horizontally
Step 4: Grab both ends and make them meet in a circular shape
Step 5: Staple or hot glue the edges (For extra support, you can hot glue a piece of cardboard to the back)
All three of these fun DIY ideas are simple to make and won’t cost you much. They are a great activity to do with your girlfriends or on your relaxing night in, and will definitely help you procrastinate your homework for at least a few more hours. Grab your glue gun, ladies — it’s time to do it yourself.
