2017 is what some would say was the introduction of another youtube influencer who has reached a celebrity stature. The age of Carmex, coffee and thrifting. Trademarked by the one and only Emma Chamberlain.
The mega youtube star first created her channel in 2017. It only took Chamberlain a few months before her channel blew up, causing her to move from her parent’s house in San Fransico to the influencer hotspot of Los Angeles.
During this time the “sister squad”– the collab between James Charles, Ethan Dolan, Greyson Dolan and Chamberlain – blew up on YouTube. Their videos would rack up millions of views just a few hours after posting. People made assumptions about Ethan Dolan and Chamberlain’s relationship because is it really Hollywood if people don’t ship somebody? Sadly, the group seemed to break up after almost a year of posting together. Fans noticed that after subtle shade tweets and a lack of collab videos, the group was done for. To be fair, it seems like every influencer friend group breaks up at some point.
Emma’s personality is what has always made her videos shine. It’s what separated her videos from other influencers. Chamberlain feels down to earth and real. A camera always in hand talking to it like a close friend. It felt like she broke through the painfully artificial role influencers used to play. For the talent, Chamberlain had in talking about anything and making it interesting. Of course, she would be the perfect person to have a podcast.
In 2019 Chamberlain created her first podcast “Stupid Genius,” where she discussed random questions such as “Why do onions make us cry.” However, this podcast only lasted a few months. Then, in early 2020, she created her second podcast “Anything Goes.”
The podcast “Anything Goes” feels reminiscent of how Chamberlain used to talk in her YouTube videos, as Chamberlain’s videos in the past two years have drifted from her original content. Chamberlain’s current youtube videos have a strong aesthetic that is relaxed. Chamberlain puts time and effort into the videography aspect of her new content. We now watch the true artist in her take over and shine. For fans who miss her talking and babbling about her life, the podcast “Anything Goes” feels far more intimate and personal than anything she has ever shared on her YouTube channel.
How each episode tends to go is Chamberlain chooses a topic for the week and rambles about it for almost an hour. Don’t be mistaken, the rambling is very thought out and poignant. Chamberlain creates a list of subtopics to talk about during the podcast and will base the episode around those ideas. The podcast shows Chamberlain is very intellectual, especially socially. Many of the episodes focus on social challenges peoples face and what her thoughts are on them.
If you are looking for an episode to listen to but don’t know where to start here are a few:
- “My philosophy on copying”
- “Post it or it didn’t happen?”
- “Dealing with difficult people”
- “Social life, success and sleep”
