After the smashing success of Rodrigo’s debut album SOUR, fans were eagerly awaiting the pop princess’s second project. Expectations were certainly high, but Rodrigo delivers on every front. Drawing inspiration from Alanis Morisette and Hayley Williams, Olivia Rodrigo’s performance at the GUTS World Tour proves she is a force to be reckoned with.
Rodrigo may claim not to be living her teenage dream, but she certainly seems to be onstage this summer. Navigating love, relationships, and identity for the first time is no easy feat, but the pop star’s music makes it seem so much fun. Is there anything better than turning our suffering into meaningful art?
Going into the concert, fans may have been expecting a low-key show identical to the SOUR tour. At the age of 19, Rodrigo hadn’t yet solidified a musical persona. The show was entertaining but lacked any individuality. Breaking out of this box is something few teenage artists can do.
On the GUTS tour, Rodrigo exceeds expectations for a sophomore album tour. The live show is stunning, from her powerful vocals and lively stage presence to the psychedelic visuals in the background.
First, Rodrigo steps out in a custom Swarovski crystal mesh bralette and skirt set that is quite literally dazzling. She confidently begins the first song of the night: “bad idea, right?” The crowd can feel the electricity in the air as Rodrigo jumps around the stage during the instrumental.
During enough for you, Rodrigo glides above the crowd on a lavender moon, much like a cloud floating across the sky. The starlet waves to the fans below, wearing a leather set, a sequin chain shift dress and fishnet stockings. The atmosphere is welcoming, communal and beautifully melancholy.
“Obsessed” is a standout from GUTS, both at the live show and on the album. During the performance, Rodrigo pulls out one of her many musical talents and shreds on an electric guitar. The rhythm of the drum beats around the room, making the floor feel like it is vibrating under your very feet. The power of the band is not to be overlooked, giving the live version of GUTS a fresh, vivacious feeling.
The singer seems like she is emotionally right where she needs to be at the age of 21. The lyrics on GUTS reflect on navigating relationships as a young adult and the lessons you learn along the way. So Rodrigo safely remains a teen punk icon, perfectly encapsulating her life as a young starlet.
When artists like Rodrigo have the success she gained so early on in their careers, they can quickly hit their ceiling. They get stuck in a loop of trying to recreate the magic of their first hit project. But Rodrigo has safely progressed into the next stage of stardom, solidifying her presence as one of the music industry’s top artists.
Artists like her must continue to grow up while finding a way to create a new sound. They need to remain fresh and innovative without stepping too far away from their established persona. For Rodrigo’s third album and tour, expectations will be even higher and she better come to impress after we’ve seen GUTS.
