As the temperature outside gets colder, your bed can begin to feel like a magnet when your alarm goes off. Do you need an extra pep in your step that coffee just isn’t doing for you?
One way to really wake up ready to conquer the day is listening to the right music. Even though the trip from your room to your class may not be very far, a couple of minutes of some tunes can jump-start your entire day. Proven to be a mood modifier, music also has the ability to enhance your levels of production and creativity.
To make the best of your morning, personalize your own playlist to put on while you walk across campus. These songs should include ones that will get you motivated for your day or wake you up.
If you aren’t feeling original, there are plenty pre-made playlists that will make you want to throw on your headphones. VALLEY suggests the Spotify-made playlists “Wake Up Happy” and “Mood Booster” for early morning commutes. The pick-me-up songs include artists like Dua Lipa, Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar and Maroon 5. All the tracks on this playlist share one common message: upbeat happiness.
While you’re at it, create a playlist for all of your daily routines.

Carly Westoff, a Penn State sophomore, says that the only thing getting her to her 8 a.m. class is blasting her “oldies” playlist. “I would be nothing without my headphones. Seriously, if I don’t listen to Bruce Springsteen once before I get to my lecture, you do not want to talk to me,” Westoff says, adding that he is her favorite artist.
Soon the BJC will host Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. It isn’t too early to brush up on his music and add “Crocodile Rock” or “Philadelphia Freedom” to your playlist. His music inspired an entire generation, so hopefully he can inspire you on the way to your biology lab.
