On April 7, Netflix posted a picture on Twitter that revealed the name of the documentary and the release date. The Beyhive went wild. The documentary details her 2018 Coachella appearance and how she prepared leading up to the legendary performance. So what is the significance of Queen Bey’s Coachella performance? Well, in the 19 years that Coachella has existed, Beyoncé was the first black female singer to headline the popular music festival.

The crowd that is typically known to attend Coachella consists largely of white, well-off millennials. Beyoncé’s motivation behind her performance and subsequent documentary is to show this demographic of people a side of black culture that they likely have not had much experience with. Her empowering and elaborate performance paid tribute to historically black universities and African-American education. After this groundbreaking performance, Beyoncé started a scholarship fund called “Homecoming,” which is presumably where the name of the much-anticipated documentary comes from.

Called the Homecoming Scholars Award Program, Beyoncé has created a scholarship in the amount of $25,000.00 for a black student to attend either Xavier, Wilberforce, Tuskegee or Bethune-Cookman, all of which are historically black. After implementing this generous scholarship, Google decided to follow suit and match Bey’s good deed. Google decided to match Beyoncé’s scholarship and open up the opportunity to four more historically black colleges.

Beyoncé’s outfits in the performance and the design in promotions for the documentary were very reminiscent of college. She gave off major Greek life vibes with the Greek letters on her top at one point in the Coachella performance and with the letters in the ads and on her merchandise.

As for the documentary itself, it is rumored to give a behind-the-scenes look at her preparation for her April 2018 Coachella performance. The trailer includes clips of Queen Bey at rehearsals, along with intimate clips of her throughout the whole process with her husband Jay-Z, their daughter Blue Ivy and twins Rumi and Sir by her side. According to Netflix, “‘Homecoming’ presents an intimate look at Beyoncé’s historic 2018 Coachella performance that paid homage to America’s historically black colleges and universities. Interspersed with candid footage and interviews detailing the preparation and powerful intent behind her vision, ‘Homecoming’ traces the emotional road from creative concept to cultural movement.” They also released that the documentary will include interviews in which Beyoncé explains the motivation behind this performance.

Take a look at the “Homecoming” trailer yourself and get excited to watch what is behind one of Beyoncé’s most iconic performances ever.
