Over the past few months, women have been strutting down the catwalk wearing menswear, and now this trend is hitting retail stores everywhere. It’s a daring look for women, but when executed correctly, makes a bold statement and looks absolutely fabulous.
One of the most chic menswear items is the boyfriend jean. Tabloids are constantly snapping shots of celebrities running errands in their loose-fitting pants. Women like Sarah Jessica Parker and Rachel Bilson pull off the look by pairing the baggy pants with a cute pair of shoes or a fitted tee. The key to pulling off men-inspired clothing is to match one bold piece with a feminine counterpart to create a fashionable balance, helping you to avoid looking like Eminem circa 2002.
If you’re feeling brave enough, dress up boyfriend jeans to go out at night. Pair them with a crop top and a sexy pair of heels to stand out in the crowd. You can buy boyfriend jeans at almost any retailer. To save some money, search the racks of second-hand stores because the fit doesn’t have to be perfect. Wearing baggy pants can be scary at first, but after you break the ice with them you’ll fall in love with the ease and coziness of the trendy fit.
Edgy menswear-inspired blazers are also a hot item right now. Whether the blazer is casual or fancy, it automatically pulls your outfit together. Theresa Ritzman, sales associate at Connections, recommended wearing an oversized blazer as a dress. To make the jacket more feminine, let a lacey bralette peek through and belt it if the blazer is long enough. You can also rock a more fitted blazer with a dark pair of skinny jeans and a statement necklace. This outfit will exude confidence and is perfect for class during the day or going out at night.
These menswear inspired pieces come in all different styles. If you’re feeling creative, pick a blazer with pattern, print or mixed texture. Mr. Charles Shop offers a black blazer inspired fall coat with leather lapel detailing. Many different types of blazers and tuxedos are available to purchase at Urban Outfitters.
Other manly–turned-feminine trends that have been stomping from the runways into the streets are printed loafers, pleated pants and long tuxedo vests. “Anything oversized is good,” said Gabby McDannel, sales associate at Connections.
There are many fashionable ways to pull off menswear without looking like you had a field day in your boyfriend’s closet.
