The sweetness of decadent chocolate with a tart strawberry addition flowing through your tastebuds, as you blissfully enjoy a cup of delectable ice cream … at 7 a.m. Wait pause, are you reading this correctly? Did VALLEY just suggest that it’s acceptable to spoil your dinner hours before dinner even crosses your mind? The answer would be absolutely!

A recent surge of food mania has attracted many individuals who have been reeled into the carnivore side of social media. This includes a member of VALLEY. As they casually stroll amongst their Instagram feed, a never-ending cycle of “nutrient-dense ice cream” recipes have been overflowing their explore page. They soon learned that the key to transforming the sugary treat into a nutritious snack is based on the ingredients used to produce it.

Ice cream is also considered an ultra-processed food – meaning that because of the processing methods used to create it, it’s typically very high in calories, fat and sugar.

The standard ice cream you’ll find resting amongst the grocery store’s shelves are mass produced in factories, using highly processed ingredients that are linked to causing damage in human cellular health. One of the most common harmful ingredients being artificial flavoring.

Despite artificial flavors being added to several common foods, “artificial flavors are chemically manufactured in labs, so they commonly contain chemicals/toxins.” Consuming a synthetic additive, such as this, has been linked to causing health consequences that “can affect our gut, liver, hormones, immune system and so much more!”

In the plethora of ingredients utilized to make ice cream, artificial flavorings are just one of the many destructive elements added, which result in this potential superfood being labeled as bad. In order to scoop out ice cream’s negative reputation, it’s critical VALLEY walks you through how to foster your own wholesome ice cream recipe. Thanks to @animalbasedtaste_, we’ve got a simple recipe that anybody is capable of doing.

All you’ll need is:

  • 1 ½ cups of milk, preferably grass-fed or raw for stronger digestive components
  • 2 cups of heavy cream, also preferably grass-fed or raw
  • ½ cup of raw honey
  • 6 pastured raised egg yolks

The best thing about being the chef behind the recipe is you have control over the additional ingredients you want to add to your homemade treat. A personal favorite of VALLEY’s is maple syrup and cacao powder to produce a chocolatey delight. The options are endless as chopped fruit, nuts or homemade cookies would be a wonderful addition too.

Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, all you need is a blender and bowl. Add the ingredients to a blender, then transfer the mixture into a glass bowl, freeze it for one hour and in thirty-minute intervals mix the mixture until it’s formed into your desired consistency.

However, if this seems too overwhelming, another route could be to hunt down an ice cream brand called Ice Cream For Bears. This company focuses on using whole ingredients to make ice cream, as they “believe in consuming foods as they exist in nature…” Ice Cream For Bears is found in a majority of Sprouts locations around the country.
