Kanye West’s promise to his fans of a new studio album has gone unfulfilled for over a year now. Since September of 2018, West has gone through numerous blown release dates, but he’s also experienced a religious awakening, which in turn left the public with his new album “Jesus Is King.”
This is the rapper’s first-ever gospel album; a collection of 11 tracks where West raps about his past, his faith and religion and highlights the biblical version of Jesus Christ.
After launching his Sunday Service events at the beginning of 2019, West has made a change from his previous music. His old songs were written about sex, money and fame, but this new era of music about Christianity is the focus of this album, and fans don’t think he’ll ever go back to his old roots. After all, Kanye told Zane Lowe, in a two-hour interview that the main goal of “Jesus Is King” is to, “convert non-believers.”
In his recent appearance on the Late Late Show with James Corden, West made for a special segment called “Airpool Karaoke.” Instead of driving around like other celebrities do for Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” segments, West took it to the skies to sit down with James for an airplane flight along with more than 100 of his Sunday Service Choir members. Usually the radio in the car provides music, but instead, the choir did the work.
During the flight, the pair discussed West’s faith, his Sunday Service events and all about the collection of songs on the album. Within just the first few minutes of the video, West talked openly about his relationship with God saying, “God’s always had a plan for me and he wanted to use me. But I think he wanted me to suffer more and wanted people to see my suffering and see my pain and put stigmas on me and have me go through all the human experiences.”
In between conversations, West’s choir performed songs from “Jesus Is King,” including “Jesus Walks,” “Souls Anchored” and “Selah,” which all bring about Christian messages.
Even when Corden asked West about his time with his family and wife, trying to take the conversation away from God, West brought it right back to faith. The interview with James Corden is available here, and “Jesus Is King” is available on Apple Music and Spotify, so definitely make sure to check it out for enlightening tunes by the one and only Kanye West.
