Many college students use their summer vacation to kick back and relax. While it’s important to rest between semesters, it is also extremely beneficial to do brain-engaging activities to keep your mind sharp during break. This can range from doing word puzzles to reading a book or just staying up to date with the news.
Doing just one brain game a day can help to make the transition back into the school year much easier. Everyone knows how it feels going back to school after a long summer in the sun. The last thing you want to do is swap your summer drink and beach ball for a textbook and 12 page report. However, we all know that this is inevitable so to make it a little easier, Valley has some brain-engaging tips for while you lounge out in the sun!
Read the News
Today, more than ever before, the news is available to us at virtually anywhere at anytime. So, while you are sitting by the pool or tanning at the beach, you should spend some time reading a few news articles. Not only does this help keep your brain focused, it is important to be aware of what is going on in our country and around the world.
Returning college student, Lauren Ford, says, “I like reading the news on my phone because it keeps my brain engaged during the summer and I like to stay up to date on current events.” It is very important for college students to be knowledgeable of current events because they greatly affect us and can be useful in our courses. If we stay up to date on current events during the school year, then we should absolutely keep up with them during the summer.
Read a Book
Another brain-engaging activity is reading a book. Although this may seem like a drag while you are not in school, there are plenty of easy reads out there that are very enjoyable! Many people do not realize that reading can be fun when there is no paper or report due after you finish the book. Choose a book that you are interested in and that you will be excited to pick up again! Need some ideas for a good summer read? Check out Valley’s picks here!
Puzzles & Games
Stay engaged during the summer by completing word searches, crosswords or sudoku! You can find these in newspapers, in apps or buy a book full of them! These are a ton of fun and can be a great pastime when you are relaxing during your vacation.
Whatever you choose to do this summer, remember: sit back, relax and keep your brain engaged!
