LED Skincare Masks: Do They Actually Work?

Every few months, a new skincare fad emerges on social media. Whether it’s “glass skin” or “slugging,” the creative approaches to achieving clear skin seem endless. The newest trend dominating the media is LED skincare masks. Powered by professional light therapy, these masks target fine lines, hyperpigmentation, acne and more.

What is Skincare Light Therapy?

Commonly used by dermatologists, Light-Emitting Diode (LED) therapy works by penetrating deep into the skin’s cell levels. Studies have shown that the lights work to improve a variety of different skin conditions, especially when complemented by ointments and creams.

Different colored LED wavelengths correspond to specific purposes. LED masks typically have an option for each color, allowing users to decide which skin concern they want to target. Red light therapy increases collagen production and reduces inflammation, which gives the skin a youthful appearance. Conversely, blue light therapy fights against acne-causing bacteria and minimizes oil glands.

LED Skincare Masks Rise in Popularity

This winter, LED masks started gaining interest on social media platforms. Influencers were promoting their seemingly endless benefits, while advertisements permeated Instagram feeds. Access to high-quality skincare treatment from the comfort of your home sets these masks apart from various other products on the market. Their versatile use and ability to target several skin concerns is another significant pull for consumers. The widespread media attention only adds to this fuel, causing sales to skyrocket over the past few months.

Is it a Scam?

Many experts have raised concerns that the mask’s benefits do not justify the cost, which often ranges from $300 to $500. Compared to the LED light therapies offered by dermatologists, the at-home masks are used for shorter periods and are, therefore, less effective.

In addition, due to the recent growth of LED mask sales, there are no long-term studies to fully support the benefits they boast. As more people continue to purchase them and document their results, more information will be available. Until then, some dermatologists advise against spending money and time on LED face mask regimens.

How Often Should the Masks Be Used?

Experts recommend that the LED masks should be used for 10-20 minutes two to three times per week. However, be sure to read the instructions for each mask since directions can vary slightly. Users can expect to begin seeing results within four to six weeks, depending on the skin concern and the color of the light used. Other products in your skincare routine can also impact the mask’s effectiveness.
