Over the years, Louis Vuitton has released many iconic collections that have solidified its role as a fashion powerhouse. However, no collection quite left its mark on fashion culture like its collaboration with Takashi Murakami in 2002. With its rainbow monogram design, the collection was both fashionable and playful. As predicted, it became a hit in the early 2000s, with various celebrities promoting the styles around Hollywood. With the resurgence of Y2K culture today, it is only appropriate that Louis Vuitton reimagines the collection in honor of its 20th anniversary. However, this time, the collaboration is connecting with our generation on a deeper level — with Zendaya as its face!
The Original Collection

First released in 2002, the collection was definitely one-of-a-kind. At the time, colorful yet classic purses like this were not available on the market. The design was more youthful and catered to younger generations who were looking to add unique accessories to their outfits. The iconic LV monograms only made the pieces even more desirable.
The design also perfectly embodies the eclectic style of the early 2000s that promoted individualism and spunk. The rise of popular trends such as Juicy Couture sweatsuits represented how color and vibrance truly came back into fashion.
After the release of the Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami collaboration, celebrities such as Jessica Simpson, Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears began wearing the bags when walking runaways and shopping. The collaboration was also featured in various iconic movies like “Mean Girls.” This exposure cemented its influence not only on Y2K fashion but on pop culture forever.
The Resurgence

20 years later, the collection is still timeless and continues to garner media attention. The first part of the collection dropped on January 1st with hundreds of stylish pieces suited for both everyday and dress wear. The second drop will be released this March. This collection includes purses, wallets, scarves, shoes and travel accessories.
Zendaya’s participation in the campaign offers a fresh outlook that allows the collection to connect with our generation. It also creates a perfect balance of nostalgia and modernity. Lastly, her involvement represents how these designs were promoted by the it-girls of both the early 2000s and today.

“The project acts as a modern-day showcase for an enduring creative bond, defined by artistic vision, remarkable feats of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology, and the timeless appeal of this seminal moment in early 21st-century pop and collector culture.”
