Looking through a mother figure’s clothes can lead to a new, stunning fashion statement. For example: low-rise jeans. Nowadays, low-rise jeans are back on trend, and everyone is obsessed with them. VALLEY thinks there’s something about older low-rise jeans that gives them a vintage yet chic look.
Trend cycles are always shifting. Take a recent trend like skinny jeans, flare jeans and wide-leg jeans. “Right now, skinny jeans are being hated on, but I’m honestly keeping mine because who knows when they’ll come back in style,” said an anonymous Penn State student. This same cycle happened with low-rise jeans. They were off-trend for a while, but some people still wore them.
To continue the cycle, a mom might still have her low-rise jeans from when she was in her 20s for the memories. Soon after, her daughter grows older and finds them, realizes they’re on trend and adopts them as her own. The funny thing is, this doesn’t only happen with low-rise jeans—it happens with all types of clothing.
So, how do you style low-rise jeans?
It really depends on the person and what feels comfortable. “I love low-rise jeans because, with high-rise, I feel like I can’t breathe when I get bloated. Low-rise [jeans] let my stomach breathe,” said another anonymous Penn State student. However, it also comes down to personal preference.
According to Real Simple, Low-rise jeans come in different styles, such as bootcut, flare and straight-leg. It also depends on body type. Whether you’re a rectangle, inverted triangle, pear or hourglass, knowing your body type can help you choose the best low-rise jean style for you.
Trends are often set by iconic celebrities. Back in the early 2000s, the iconic Paris Hilton rocked low-rise denim, and soon every other teen girl wanted—or wore—them. Recently, low-rise jeans have made a comeback through TikTok influencers and celebrities who started wearing them again.
Most people pair low-rise jeans with a cute tank top or shirt, depending on the weather. You can elevate an outfit with accessories like a cute purse, jewelry and more. If you’re going for a vintage vibe, stick with other clothes that match that aesthetic. Focus on what colors work best for you, and have fun with it—at the end of the day, it’s all about what makes you feel comfortable!
