If you haven’t already heard, ties are experiencing a feminist takeover. This historically male accessory is beginning to make its way into women’s fashion –– and VALLEY is here for it. With so many style icons accessorizing with ties, they are becoming more established in everyday streetwear. Here is how the tie has been revived to be inclusive of women.

Tie Style Icons

Who is starting this tie revolution? One tie icon is Cosmopolitan and Seventeen Magazine editor-in-chief Willa Bennett. She has been seen in photo shoots, interviews and out-and-about with her signature tie on, making her outfits look businessy with a fun flare. As editor in chief of two well established magazines, Bennett’s ties match her title –– radiating business, boss and brilliance.

You can even see Bennett on Jake Shane’s podcast, Therapuss, in her signature look: a tie, collared shirt and blazer.

Another icon who is bringing the tie to our desk is comedian and one half of “Giggly Squad,” Hannah Berner. Throughout “Giggly Squad”’s live shows over the past year, Berner has styled some of her outfits with a variety of ties –– even leading many fans to come to the shows sporting their own. Berner’s ties exude confidence, particularly when she does the worm on stage for her live shows.

Berner and her cohost, Paige Desorbo, routinely discuss the feminine takeover of the tie on “Giggly Squad,” raising awareness for this accessory in feminine fashion. Between Berner’s ties and Desorbo’s bows, they have become style guides for fashion and accessories.

Ties haven’t only been seen on Bennett and Berner, though. The red carpet has seen women in ties for years now, such as Zendaya, Ayo Edebiri, Bella Hadid and more. Even shows like “Gossip Girl” have shown the tie’s ability in preppy style. But, because of people like Bennett and Berner who have a closer following and less of a celebrity status, they are able to make the tie more relatable to their fans and women in general.

How to Style a Tie

First of all, watch a YouTube tutorial on tying a tie. Do it a couple of times –– see how you like it. A tie is versatile. You can loosen it to give off a more casual, Serena van der Woodsen look, or tighten it up to a collared shirt to make an outfit more formal.

Still, be creative with it. Women are taking over the tie –– so embrace it and wear it the way you want.
