On October 25, Mike Johnson was elected as Speaker of the House, becoming the 56th speaker in the history of the United State’s government.

As the government proceeds to move forward and Johnson takes on a new role, citizens should be informed on the new Speaker of the House and what this means for future legislation.

What is the Role of the Speaker of the House?

The individual who is elected as Speaker of the House controls the institutional business that occurs on the House floor.

Essentially, the Speaker is one of the key negotiators between the House, president and with the Senate. It is important to note that the Speaker is the major political party leader in the House.

Who is Mike Johnson?

Mike Johnson’s selection as the Speaker of the House has raised questions of his experience and credibility in an important role. Johnson has served as a Republican representative of Louisiana, elected in 2016.

With about four years of experience, his name is not as reputable as others who have served within the U.S. government for longer periods of time.

Johnson’s has a background in law, with a career as a defense lawyer who defended religious cases and other civil issues. His beliefs are more conservative and are considered to be from a more social conservative wing.

Considering his background and years of experience, most see Johnson as an inexperienced candidate for Speaker of the House. It is debated by most whether his lack of experience comes as a benefit or disadvantage for his role.

Further Impact

Johnson does not have experience in witnessing and delegating tasks that require both political parties, especially within the White House.

His experience within the House becomes questionable as he has a less understanding of cross-party discussions on legislation than previous Speakers.

On the other hand, Johnson is not as known as previous Speakers, making him less susceptible to biases from other sources. Mike Johnson can potentially have a cleaner slate than other politicians that step into his role with his lack of credibility from outside sources.

It is unprecedented to confirm his stance on future legislation and how it will ultimately impact the law of the United States. Johnson will navigate a potential government shutdown in November and continue on as a negotiator for future bills.

A government shutdown is not ideal, especially with the Republican party. A possible outcome could include Johnson preventing this outcome alongside his Republican allies but it is not confirmed.

Johnson will handle legislation and funding regarding Ukraine and Israel which are political topics within our government today. With his recent experience, only time will tell on future decisions that can impact U.S. citizens.
