Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

There is something truly majestic about mirrors. They are decorative pieces found in just about every bedroom, bathroom and car in the world. Mirrors are something that most people take for granted, as they are everywhere. What is it about them that makes them so fascinating? Because at the end of the day, they’re just reflective pieces of glass.

Their Practicality

Mirrors come in all shapes and sizes, much like their users. They are everywhere, from wall decor pieces to being inside of makeup palettes and powder compacts to rear view and backup mirrors. Additionally, now with overconsuming technology, we are surrounded by “black mirrors” twenty-four-seven.

While for most people, mirrors are simply an afterthought, it’s worth noting how captivating they are. In older times, mirrors were known as “looking glasses” – and that is what they are in a nutshell, instruments for looking at yourself and maybe, even nitpicking.

Is There a Problem?

In the harsh and brutal society we live in, it’s no wonder we are always comparing ourselves to others. So, is it really all that surprising that the concept of focusing on your imperfections is all over the media that we are surrounded by?

Sometimes, the best form of entertainment is simply staring at your reflection (especially after a good cry). There is nothing quite like the sight of seeing your own glossy eyes and flushed cheeks in the middle of a crying session.

The truth is that we all have imperfections, no one is perfect. So maybe we should stop spending so much time looking at our reflections and instead embrace the fact that we all are beautiful.

In Reality

We are our toughest critics. And while people may never stop pointing out their own flaws, it’s worth discussing how rewarding it is to be kinder and gentler, especially in regard to your appearance.

Sure, it can be infuriating to come back to your bedroom or bathroom after a night out and finally stare into a mirror and see that you have lip gloss on your teeth, mascara smudged on your eyelids or your hair is out of place … but what’s happened is in the past!

Remember that not a single one of us is perfect and that you are beautiful just the way you are. We need to start spending less time worrying about our reflections in the mirror and more time admiring the person looking back.
