Netflix’s “Emily in Paris” Reminds Us of “Sex and the City” in the Best Way

Darren Star, the man behind “Sex and the City” has done it again with Netflix’s new series, “Emily in Paris.” The fun new show has everyone talking, binge-watching and planning trips to Paris. The series follows the American Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins, as her Louboutins—not Manolos—carry her through her new life working at a Parisian marketing agency.

Charming and clueless, Emily arrives in Paris knowing no French and to a somewhat unfriendly welcome at her new workplace. The real thing that sets her apart from her French co-stars however is her colorful outfits.

Cutting through the Parisian streets and breaking up the uniform of the all-black outfit, one can’t help but be reminded of the iconic Carrie Bradshaw. This is most likely because Patricia Field, the costume designer for “Emily in Paris” was also the creator of your favorite looks from “Sex and the City” in addition to “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Confessions of a Shopaholic.”

“She wasn’t French chic all the way, even though she has influences, so, I felt that she was the young optimist, and came from Chicago, and wore colors, and she stood alone in that philosophy of wardrobe,” Field tells PAPER Magazine.

Although we could go on and on about the different looks Emily dons in the series, here are VALLEY’s favorite looks.

1. The Night at the Ballet

The modern-day Audrey Hepburn, Patricia Field said Lily Collins inspired her to pay homage to the “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” star for this all-black Christian Siriano look Emily wore to the Paris ballet.

2. The Sunny Silk Ensemble

This lemon yellow silk skirt and top combo from Ganni taught us a lesson in mixing girly and edgy thanks to the studded Rag and Bone belt. We are obsessed.

3. The Checkered Set

Matching sets are all the rage right now and as Emily has taught us countless times before, never shy away from prints! Emily also shows she can adapt to the classic French girl style with the canvas tote bag and bright red beret.

4. The Paris Skyline But Make it a Top

While the French would probably shy away — or shudder– from wearing French landmarks on their clothing, this Alice + Olivia button-down top perfectly captures Emily’s American Girl in Paris style. We especially love how it is paired with the vegan leather snakeskin skirt.

Just like audiences fell in love with Carrie Bradshaw, you are sure to love Emily Cooper—and all of her outfits—which can be viewed on Netflix now. Happy binge-watching everyone.
