Nine-to-Fives Are So Over

Throughout recent years, the way we work has changed. And now, Gen Z is tired of the typical nine-to-five work schedule. But why is this? VALLEY is here to unpack some reasons behind this change!

We’re creative.

This generation has blossomed with creativity. We are bored of the average, mundane jobs and crave more. We desire to be creative in our everyday lives, not just outside of the office. In turn, those jobs that offer more creativity often aren’t structured in the typical nine-to-five format.

We’ve seen people our age do it with success.

With the constant stream of social media, we can watch almost anything we want. This also means we can create anything we want, which leads to a plethora of monetization opportunities. Almost anyone can promote their business, products or services on social media. We aren’t afraid to put ourselves out there and try because we have seen people our age, or even younger, do so with success (for example, creators like Alix Earle, Logan Paul, Charli D’Amelio, etc.).

We’re independent.

This generation is independent. We aim to prove that we can work hard to achieve our goals and that we don’t have to follow the conventional path many take. We want to be independent and set ourselves up for success on our own terms.

Jobs don’t look the way they used to.

We want to be different from our parents and that’s okay. Our world is constantly evolving and changing. The workforce and job landscape doesn’t look the same as it did 20 to 30 years ago, especially considering the changes that happened after COVID-19. Work-from-home and hybrid options make it easier than ever to complete your job on your schedule.

We’re all about the work-life balance.

This generation craves a work-life balance. We want to “work to live” rather than to “live to work.” Having the time to catch up with friends or spend time with family after a day of work is so important and our generation prioritizes that. We also want to experience life to the fullest. This may mean taking more opportunities to travel outside of work and wanting to make the time for it (or even getting paid to do so)!

“So, what are my job opportunities?”

If you are unsure about your career path but know you do not want to live the nine-to-five, here are some possible job opportunities for you:

  • Freelance Blogger / Photographer
  • Virtual Assistant
  • Social Media Manager
  • Personal Trainer
  • Substitute Teacher / Tutor
  • Medical Transcriptionist
  • Nurse
  • Real Estate Agent

As you can see, there are a multitude of stable job opportunities for those who don’t want to work the average nine-to-five desk job. Although not everyone wants to live the nine-to-five lifestyle, some find that this classic work style is what works best for them and that’s okay! It’s important to remember that everyone has their unique style and what works best for them.

Everyone has their own methods of productivity. It’s also important to remember that while the nine-to-five may or may not be for you right now, that is apt to change throughout the course of your life. Depending on your life stage and milestones, what works best for you might look different than it does at other points in your journey.
