A night out in Downtown State College is a chance to meet up with friends and let loose from the week’s horrors. As you wait in line for Doggie’s Pub, tiny ghost-like puffs drift into the air, carrying sweet, fruity scents that hint at their origin. At a closer glance, you’ll notice the vivid colors of vapes glowing in the hands of students. But wait—why are they reading text messages? That’s right, these aren’t just vapes anymore—they’re phones.
Not Just a Vape anymore
The counter display might already be familiar for frequent visitors to Diplo-MART: an array of touchscreen vapes that blur the lines between tech and trend. Named “Smart Vapes”, vape brands like Swype and AirFuze elevate the experience with features like phone call notifications, text messaging, games, weather updates and even a calculator. It’s vaping reimagined, named as the beginning of “vapertainment”.
Swype uses Bluetooth to connect your phone to function as a “mini-phone”. While you can receive phone call notifications that direct you to pick up your phone, you cannot call people as it does not have a built-in speaker or microphone. Additionally, Swype is a disposable vape and offers up to 30,000 puffs. AirFuze takes smart vape to a new level with a music-playing feature. Prices for smart vapes range between $15-$20 depending on where you purchase one.
A New Culture?
Touchscreen vapes have become increasingly popular in State College. Its’ innovative technology brings convenience to users who want to experience something new apart from the traditional vape.
While Smart Vapes may be marketed as a safer alternative to smoking, it’s important to recognize that as Smart Vapes become more popular, vaping is not risk-free. Studies have shown that e-cigarettes can still expose users to harmful substances, and the long-term health effects remain unclear.
The Smart Vape exemplifies how technology is shaping the vaping industry, offering features that enhance user control and convenience. However, it’s vital to consider the broader implications of vaping and remain informed about its risks.
