As graduation is nearing, you may be wondering where you’ll move after your time at Penn State comes to a close. Especially for those in the College of Communications, let this serve as VALLEY’s guide to big cities in the U.S. and the potential opportunities within them.
Chicago
“The Windy City,” located in Central America, offers bountiful opportunities within communications fields, especially those within advertising and journalism.
Top advertising and creative agencies like Ogilvy, Leo Burnett, FCB, DDB, Digitas and BBDO have offices located in the heart of this city. Additionally, Chicago is known for top-notch publications like the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times.
Los Angeles
Los Angeles has amazing opportunities for television and film. Hollywood, within LA, is often referred to as “Tinseltown” because of its immense amount of opportunities for film production and entertainment.
Major film studios such as Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Studios, Universal Pictures and Columbia Pictures can all be found in Los Angeles, and the sunny weather can’t be beat!
New York City
“The Big Apple” has anything you could possibly imagine and more. You can find a job in this city for anything and everything communications-related, including news broadcasting, advertising, public relations, talk shows, media, journalism and more!
NBCUniversal, The New York Times, ABC7, Wieden+Kennedy and BCW Global are just a few examples of the tremendous opportunities that New York City has to offer.
Philadelphia
This “City of Brotherly Love” is ranked as one of the 10 best cities for PR in 2024. Red Thread PR, Tierney, Pavone and Buchanan Public Relations are only some of the leading PR firms in this area.
Philly has also been named the “Most Walkable City in the U.S.” – a plus for anyone who needs to get around in a rush!
Washington, D.C.
The United States Capitol is home to some of the most distinguished and prestigious communications jobs, including reporting, media and journalism, international relations, research and public information.
If you ever find yourself in D.C., consider working for major outlets like The Washington Post, CNN, CBS News, ABC News, NPR or any offices within the U.S. Government.
Other Opportunities
There are so many other job opportunities around the country, but these are just some opportunities you can find for communications careers in the United States. If none of these cities seem to be your perfect fit, check out job opportunities within other cities such as San Franciso, Seattle, Atlanta, Austin, Miami and more.
If you aren’t a city person, that’s okay too! You can also find communications-related jobs local to your hometown or even remote job opportunities and work from wherever you want! Ultimately, the decision is completely up to you. Just remember … don’t stress out about it! You will find the right job (and in the right place) for you when it’s time.
