Unless you’re living under a rock, you’re familiar with nationwide pop-princess icon Olivia Rodrigo. The American singer-songwriter rose to immense fame with her heart-wrenching, yet relatable pop ballads on albums “Sour” and “Guts.” As she has evolved in her musical voice, she has also evolved in her look book.

From Disney to Stadiums
Born in 2003, Olivia Rodrigo began her career as a child actor appearing in commercials. Her acting took her far into Disney Channel, starring in series such as “Bizaardvark” and “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.”
In 2021, Rodrigo released her single “Driver’s License” which kickstarted her career into music and singing (as well as a public love-triangle debate with former Disney co-star Joshua Bassett and singer Sabrina Carpenter). Since then, she has created an entirely new name for herself, releasing two studio albums which other known hits like “Deja Vu,” “Vampire” and “Bad Idea Right?”

The Beginning
Rodrigo has been shaping her musical persona to have more “rock” and “edge” into her looks than most other pop stars have recently. With her debut album that she wrote at the age of 17, she had channeled a more innocent version of this; Rodrigo sported lots of cardigans, plaid patterns and statement jewelry, exemplifying her teenager mentality.
“Sour” explores ideas like heartbreak, betrayal and angst. Various songs on the album discuss built up sadness for an ex-relationship that wronged her and resentment for being stuck in the body of a 17-year-old. Rodrigo expresses these concepts in her wardrobe, revealing the angsty, yet vulnerable side of her that her audience relates to.

Her Confidence
Her sophomore album, “Guts” has shown a more mature side to the musician. Releasing it at the age of 19, Rodrigo has learned to face her fears head on; although she still struggles with some form of rebellion and grief, she is more attuned to her flaws. She’s more vulnerable than ever and is not afraid to show it.
Her recent tour looks reflect this. Incorporating glitter, printed baby tees and lots of red show more maturity in Rodrigo’s persona. Not only has she grown up, but even if she still deals with relationship horror and the fear of being perceived, she has learned a lot through hardship and age.

In anticipation of her third studio album, fans have been adoring Rodrigo’s new look and wonder what more is to come for the songwriter. What we do know at VALLEY, as avid fans of the 21-year-old sensation, is that confidence is key in fashion.
Utilizing fun pieces like statement tops and platform boots is not only a way to enhance Rodrigo’s rockstar attitude. It’s also a way to convey her feelings and perceptions of the world. She was once the former Disney star crying over her guitar in her bedroom. Now, she’s a worldwide sensation who has grown to accept her faults. And it shows.
