Pinterest-Unworthy Emoji Cookies

Let me just start off by saying that, while I’m not terribly terrible at baking, I’m not terribly great either. I decided that making emoji cookies would be super cute and simple enough for me to make, right? I could just get away with drawing simple enough faces; no problem! How badly could I mess it up?

Spoiler alert: they came out pretty subpar, but whatever.

I made my way over to the grocery store and gathered the necessary ingredients: different colored frostings, food coloring and cookie mix. I rushed back home, determined to make the cutest, Pinterest-worthy cookies possible. I figured I would choose simple enough emojis so when I inevitably messed them up, I could play it off as a, “No guys, the joke is that they’re ugly!”

But much to my dismay, they came out just O.K.—not ugly enough to be a joke, and nowhere near cute enough to be worth spending as long as I did on them. I can safely say they’re edible, but not the least bit visually appealing. If you think you’ll be any better at it than me—which you probably will—take your best shot. Along with the recipe, I’ve included some don’t’s in order to make your emoji cookies much, much cuter than mine. Enjoy, and Valley wishes you a Happy World Emoji Day!

What you’ll need (6 cookies):

1 pack of cookie mix of your choice and required ingredients as directed on box
1 16 oz. tub of Pillsbury Creamy Supreme Vanilla frosting
1 pack of assorted food coloring
0.67 oz. tubes of Betty Crocker decorative gel of your choice
1 tablespoon
1 miniature bowl
1 butter knife

What to do:

1. Follow the directions listed for the cookie mix of your choice. I chose Betty Crocker Hershey Chocolate Chunk.

Tip: Avoid the mistake I made and don’t try to soften butter by popping it in the microwave with the mix. The chocolate chips will melt otherwise, creating darker than desired cookies.

2. After placing cookies in oven, scoop five tablespoons of Pillsbury frosting into miniature bowl, along with 5-6 drops of yellow food coloring. This will provide you with the yellow emoji face.

3. After taking the cookies out, place them in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes to speed up the cooling process.

Tip: Don’t apply any frosting before, or it’ll melt and make for some less-than-average looking emojis.

4. Take the cookies out of the refrigerator, begin spreading the frosting on the surface of the cookie as evenly as possible.

5. Proceed to drawing the faces on the cookies using the appropriate colors.

Tip: Be careful not to cut the tip of the gel too wide! The wider the cut, the messier the face.

6. After you’ve had your fun drawing, relish in your hard work and give yourself a pat on the back.

If you’re doubting your creation, take a look at my own cookies. They’re no doubt worse, so feel free to take comfort in that.

7. Lastly, of course, enjoy! And don’t worry… ugly or not, your roommates will most likely thank you for the extra treats.
