We all know the pop star formula by now. Bubbly + good hair + catchy lyrics about being a girl boss, finding love, or the lack thereof = pop stardom. We also know that succeeding in the pop industry could mean a meager year or even a month of fame before the next perfectly formulated girl takes the stage and snatches the attention away.
So how does one ensure that they carve a long-term place for themselves in such an unpredictable field? Well, be like Sabrina Carpenter.
What Sets this Short n’ Sweet Girl Apart?
Sabrina Carpenter established herself through various projects like “Girl Meets World,” “Mean Girls the Musical” and other media. The thing that recently skyrocketed her fame, however, is her catchy pop music coupled with her colorful, alluring aesthetic.
So, what makes Sabrina’s music different from all the rest? She utilizes her theater kid roots from various acting projects to add drama and catchy wordplay into her music.
For the Love of Rhymes
Sabrina has always spoken about her passion for words and fun rhymes, as displayed by her signature rotating outros for the song “Nonsense.” Every time she performs the song on tour, she crafts a personalized three-line verse for the city she is in. During her Boston show she addressed the crowd, singing:
You’re so hot, I must proceed with caution,
Its wicked awesome to be here in Boston,
If your ex wants you back it’s gonna cost him.
Sabrina Carpenter makes her crowds feel special with catchy wordplay. This skill was surely enhanced by her time performing in local plays as a child, television shows, and Broadway musicals.
The Sabrina Smirk
Her facial expressions also showcase her acting background. Watching a Sabrina Carpenter performance means losing count of how many cheeky smiles, wide-eyed gasps and contemplative glances she gifts the crowd. A singer who has little acting experience might fall short of engaging the crowd, but Sabrina surely puts on a show.
What the Fence?
It’s also evident that Sabrina is not afraid of a little drama in her music, as shown by her newly released music video for “Taste.” The music video features herself and Jenna Ortega as they continuously murder each other in hopes of winning the attention of a man.
At one point in the video, an angry Ortega pushes Carpenter out of a window and is then impaled by a white picket fence. While a chunk of the fence is still stuck in her abdomen, Sabrina lies on an operating table and continues singing about a boy.
More traditional pop stars would cringe at the idea of gory imagery like that being released to millions, but Sabrina welcomes it with open arms. Her intriguing theatrics sets her apart from more run-of-the-mill pop stars. At the end of the day, Sabrina’s fearlessly authentic brand is what makes her a true star.
