So What? I’m a Type B Roommate

Maybe there are some dishes sitting in the sink for a couple of days or two weeks’ worth of dirty laundry piled up in the corner of your room. But who cares, it’ll get done eventually right?

Being the type B roommate requires a sense of comfort in chaos. Your skin won’t crawl if the living room hasn’t been vacuumed in a week.

Coming to college, for some people, is the first time having a roommate experience. That adjustment is hard if you grew up with your own room and had the luxury of cleaning it whenever it was convenient for you.

Type A versus Type B

If there is any life lesson college can offer, it is that people are creatures of habit. There is no chance of a type A roommate changing the way a type B operates.

But this doesn’t make a type B roommate dirty or messy. You can be a ‘clean girl’ without a 15-step morning and nighttime skincare routine. That aesthetic is arguably over dramatic.

For a type A roommate, every day is a Sunday reset. They wake up and make their bed every morning, wash their dishes immediately after they finish eating and make sure the pillows on the couch are perfectly fluffed.

There is no right or wrong way to be. Type A and type B roommates balance each other out organically.

To make it work though, roommates have to be mindful of one another.

To Make a House a Home

Another word to describe the type B roommate would be minimalistic. During college move-in, they aren’t there at the crack of dawn with a U-Haul.

Additionally, they probably won’t contribute to unnecessary decorations and gadgets to fill the apartment. Yes, the basic needs for the kitchen, living room, bathroom and any other space will be filled. However, there doesn’t need to be an Alexa in every room.

Decorating apartments is half the fun of living in them, but if it was up to the type B roommate, there would probably be a couple of bare walls. It comes down to convenience and thinking about the hassle it will be to take everything down in nine months.

You can make an apartment or dorm a home without a bunch of expensive and clever decorations. It is about the memories made inside.

That is also why when a type B roommate is asked what they contribute to the apartment, they’ll probably say “laughter and a good time.”
