Even though the State College streets are icy and show absolutely no evidence of an approaching spring season, new fashion trends are making their way through. It’s time to put away the dreary black totes. Colorful and playful bags ruled the Spring/Summer 2014 runways during fashion week. The bold designs have translated beautifully into ready-to-wear looks that we, as college students, can access and purchase. This spring it’s all about pastel colored bags.
“State College is going to be all about clutches and cross body bag to go out with at night,” said Bella Bucci, assistant manager at Metro. She also added that the bags will be popular in “pastels for spring.”
Many of the cross body and clutch sized bags are going through an intense geometric phase. Box-shaped bags were notorious on the runways. These are edgier and can add crispness to your outfit. A geometric bag will compliment a flowy blouse paired with skinny jeans.
However, the geometric look isn’t for everyone. Choose a clutch or cross body in a spring color with hints of gold. An easy bag like this can be worn day or night with a variety of different outfits. When shopping for a clutch, be sure to pick one with a removable strap. This way, if the clutch is too much to hold on to with a drink in one hand and a cell phone in the other, you can easily clip the strap in place to wear the bag across your body.
Another popular trend is the foldover bag, said Gloria Santiago, sales associate at Metro. These bags are made in a leather material and usually have a zipper closure around the circular top. Brands like Marc by Marc Jacobs and Kate Spade are most famous for the foldover bag. Luckily, they retail at much more attainable prices at many fast fashion stores. Choose a faux leather material in a light green or pink to be perfectly on trend for spring. Foldover bags also transition perfectly from day to night.
Santiago also recommended the structured shoulder weekenders. These bags are more difficult to pull off and are mostly captured by fashion bloggers roaming the streets of SoHo and Brooklyn. Choose ones in canvas materials with bright, springy colors. They’re perfect for weekend trips traveling away from State College.
