Election season is here ladies and gentlemen and students on campus are using their voices to share the importance of voting with their peers. One organization that has continued to push for this is the National-Pan-Hellenic Council, better known as the NPHC or Divine 9 on campus. They rallied together to discuss the importance of voting in their style… with Chucks and Pearls.
What is the NPHC?
The National-Pan-Hellenic Council, better known as the NPHC, was initiated on May 10, 1930, at Howard University. These organizations were created during a period when African Americans were being denied essential rights on PWI campuses and throughout the country due to racial strife. BGLOs created an outlet for sisterhood and brotherhood to enact social change for the general public.

Why Chucks and Pearls Matter!
Within the Divine 9 sororities, pearls have different meanings. However, when events like Chucks and Pearls take place, they channel a sense of community through sacred principles.
Chucks and Pearls have a different meaning today thanks to Kamala Harris. The Vice President is not only a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. but also an avid wearer of the shoe and accessory combo. During her campaign, Harris was seen wearing the two quite a bit and even used her social media presence to share captions channeling back to this statement.
Students to the polls!
So here we are now, with the election a few days out and students doing their due diligence to inform their classmates of the importance of voting. The NPHC hosted an event on October 28, “Chucks and Pearls Voter Education Dinner Forum,” showcasing civic engagement and empowerment.
The event was hosted by the NPHC and Penn State OFSL after Pennsylvania’s mail-in ballot deadline. The event consisted of dinner, round table discussions and organizations like PSU Votes handing out voting information for the State College region.
The art of voting!
This event proves that our vote as students does matter. As citizens, our rights are on the line. As we continue to move through life and start to create active change in our small pieces of the world, VALLEY implores all of its readers to use their voices and vote on November 5.
