Generation Z has taken over the world in the last few years. From social media domination to new fashion trends to political outcry, the whole universe has heard of them by now. One of the trends that has taken over the fashion industry in the last few years is the comeback of the butterfly trend. The butterfly trend has made appearances throughout fashion history before, all at the perfect times. Seen on clothing, jewelry and tattoo designs, the butterfly has been a symbol of transformation, hope and faith for the last thousand or so years. It has symbolized rebirth in life, as it has to go through many cycles to reach its true form.
In the 60s, the butterfly made its appearance in mainstream fashion. Throughout this decade, nature was a common theme in trends. Bringing about the Civil Rights Movement, as well as the beginning of second wave feminism, the 60s was a kaleidoscope of activism. Norms were constantly changing, evolving and growing during this time, much like a butterfly. So, naturally the symbol made its way onto magazine covers and had now become a vintage trend.
Fast-forward to the 2000s, the butterfly makes an appearance in trending symbols again — this time, making a much bigger splash. Butterflies were seen on all kinds of things, from decor to hair clips. The 2000s were slightly more conservative, but this trend would foreshadow the big changes that would come about in the following decade. The biggest change was definitely the legalization of gay marriage all over the United States. Colorful and fun, the late 2000s made for the perfect transition into the modern world that we know today.
Now, at a time when we need this symbol more than ever, the butterfly is back once again. America is entering a recession of sorts for activism. After the #MeToo movement, which opened many doors in feminism, the political sphere is more divided than ever. After the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the election of Donald Trump and several mass shootings, we need to stand up and fight before it’s too late. Everyone must band together, find their voices and make some change once again. Much like the butterfly, activists of the 2020s must soon spread their wings and take flight.
