The “Old Town Road” singer, Lil Nas X, has created controversy after releasing a music video for his song, “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” and a pair of satanic-themed shoes.
The 21-year-old singer displayed demonic imagery that played with Christian themes in the video. It included scenes of him sliding down a stripper pole into hell, giving Satan a lap dance, engaging with demons and the serpent in the Garden of Eden and more. The music video generated over 45 million views on YouTube since being released on March 26.
Ever since the release of the music video, Lil Nas X has taken time out of his day not only to appreciate the love and support from his fans but has also taken the time to defend his creation from critics.
The young artist tweeted in the middle of the video’s barrage of criticism about his struggle with his sexuality as a teen, “I spent my entire teenage years hating myself because of the sh** y’all preached would happen to me because I was gay.”
Some individuals were happy that Lil Nas X was able to be a beautiful and talented person despite the incoming of people’s ignorant opinions growing up as a teenager. However, not everyone was happy with his decision to release the music video and shoes. Former NBA player, Nick Young, shared his disappointment on Twitter, tweeting, “My kids will never play Old Town road again… I’m still debating about wearing @Nike after this come nike a drop of blood for real.”
Clapping back with a sense of humor, Lil Nas X responded with, “they shouldn’t be playing old town road anyways, we streaming call me by your name now 😌 .”

The shoes sold at $1,018 a pair and sold out after being released on Monday, March 26th.
Nike has a filed a copyright lawsuit against MSCHF over the controversial shoes. Nike claims to have no partnership with Lil Nas X, MSCHF, and the creation of the shoes.
