The state of Texas is taking the border crisis into its own hands. Over the past year, the number of illegal border crossings has increased significantly. In the month of September, over 200,000 illegal immigrants crossed the Texas border, making it the highest level recorded this year. It is predicted that along with 2022, 2023 will surpass 2 million illegal immigrations. The last two years have been the highest recorded in United States history.
President Biden’s open border strategy has backfired. Drugs and weapons have been taking over the Lone Star State and it is due to the mass number of illegal crossings. Currently, the state of Texas is actively raising money for border security, border transportation and the border wall. Additionally, the Texas Senate has been trying to advance border legislation. One of these new additions includes longer sentences for human smuggling. Another proposes making an unauthorized entry a state crime.
Constructing the border wall in Texas has geographical struggles, due to the Rio Grande, compared to California, New Mexico and Arizona. Despite the fact that the Biden Administration has claimed the border wall to be ineffective, the President is adding sections in south Texas. The 20 miles of additional wall is waiving around two dozen environmental laws.
Environmentalists have been outraged for some time now. The wall that President Trump built caused destruction to water flow and sacred tribal sites. Some endangered species are at higher risk of extinction due to the wall’s impact on the environment. The Trump Administration waived environmental laws, as President Biden is doing now.
Additionally, many truck inspections at the border have caused truck delays. On Oct. 8, 2023, 19,000 trucks were stopped at the border, delaying deliveries holding 1.9 billion dollars worth of goods. This has caused the Mexican government to fight back.
On Oct. 9, 2023, the president of Mexico, Andres Manual Lopez Obrador, reported that he was going to send a diplomatic note to the United States in protest of the truck inspections. These issues have been causing additional political tension between the United States, specifically the Texas government, and Mexico.
