She is the picture of effortless elegance — that mom who is always put together, taking good care of her mind and body, going to the country club, wearing her chic sets and, of course, never missing a Pilates class.
When it comes to us college girls, we sort of take a different route, which is perfectly okay. We are starting to discover and figure out what we want for our future selves.
So, why wait to embrace the Pilates mom lifestyle?
Right now, making small changes and implementing new habits can help us gracefully age like fine wine and set up our future selves for a great life.
Research from an Oxford study showed that a poor diet, lack of exercise and stress are the factors that accelerate brain degeneration. According to Vogue, “Not only does regular movement prevent depression and ease stress, it’s also a proven strategy for protecting the body, brain and heart.”
So, how can we start making meaningful changes?
We can support our well-being and brain health by implementing a balanced, healthy diet and prioritizing sleep quality and physical activity. One fundamental thing that all Pilates moms have is an abundant social life. To boost this in college, you can join a sport, a club, a sorority or anything that gives you real-life connections with people who are interested in the same things you’re interested in.
This is why, when you see them at the country club, they are often surrounded by their girlfriends, laughing and catching up post-hot yoga while their husbands are playing golf.
Reduce eating out and instead make meals that truly nourish your body. Take time to read, relax and recharge. Hit the gym with a friend if that’s what keeps you motivated. Spend as much time as possible with your girlfriends — college won’t last forever. And remember, a night out doesn’t always have to involve drinking; sometimes the best memories are made just by being present and having fun.
It’s not a lifestyle; it’s a mindset. Simply by implementing these habits in your day-to-day, you can take care of yourself while still enjoying your college life.
Instead of looking in the mirror years from now and thinking, “Ugh, I should have taken better care of myself,” you’ll be saying, “I’m so grateful I started prioritizing my well-being early on — it shows in who I am today.”
Trust us on this one, the future Pilates mom you are going to become will thank you.
