Asking someone to borrow their shirt is a phrase every girl has either said or heard once in her life. There are many reasons why this phrase pops up constantly. It could be that none of your outfits are working out how you imagined or maybe you just love that one sweater your best friend wears all the time. At one point or another, in your life, you and your friends have probably shared a closet.
Sharing is Caring
Sharing your closet and jewelry with your closest girlfriends is a right of womanhood. Maybe you need a shirt for an upcoming interview or your friend asks to borrow a hoodie for class because she forgot her’s.
When you open up your closet to your friends it creates a strong bond and a sense of camaraderie. Although lending your friend a pair of earrings or shoes for a date might not seem very big, these little moments can be quite intimate.
By lending a friend something of yours, it can create a subtle but powerful form of trust. It’s an unspoken agreement that speaks to a bond that transcends materialism. Our clothes and jewelry, after all, are personal. They carry our scent, our shape and our energy. Passing them to a friend is a way of passing on a piece of yourself to them. It’s fashion with a heart and it’s here to stay.
Opening Yourself Up to New Styles
Another benefit to opening up your closets in your friend group is that it gives you a creative chance to try and find new styles. The same denim jacket can take on an entirely new personality depending on who is wearing it and how they style it.
You could pair it with jeans and some tennies for a casual look. Your friend, however, could layer it over a dress for a summer picnic vibe. Each friend brings their own personal flair to the mix expanding the possibilities of what an outfit can become. The result of this creates a revolving door for a closet that’s ever changing.
Sustainable Fashion
On top of the creativity that opening up your closet gives you, it’s also a step away from the wastefulness of fast fashion. By sharing each others’ closets, it creates an eco-friendly alternative to purchasing a whole new wardrobe. Instead of investing in buying new pieces when you feel like changing up your style, try borrowing clothes from your friends.
This way, you can experiment with different styles without having to break the bank. Can’t decide if street style is something you might like? See if your friends can lend something of a similar style and try it out. If you love it, then you can feel at ease investing in some new pieces. If you don’t, then no damage done.
