On Jan. 13, the first safer drug consumption facility in the United Kingdom was opened in Glasgow, Scotland. The facility named The Thistle, is a new approach in the city’s efforts to address drug use and improve public health.

How the Facility Works
The purpose of this facility is to provide a safe space where people can use drugs under the supervision of trained nurses. By offering clean equipment and medical oversight, the facility helps reduce the risk of spreading blood diseases. It also gives individuals access to a more hygienic and controlled environment, rather than using drugs in unsafe public spaces. In doing so, it aims to reduce visible drug use on the streets and contribute to a cleaner and safer environment for everyone.
To access the facility, individuals must book an appointment in advance. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. throughout the year. An article published on the website Talking Drugs shares a first-hand account of someone’s experience using the facility. According to the article upon arrival, visitors are brought to a space known as the ‘chat room,’ where they are given information about how the facility works and are asked to share some basic details about themselves. After that, they are guided to another room with individual cubicles. Each cubicle is set up with sterile supplies and comfortable seating. Due to legal restrictions, medical staff are not allowed to assist with the drug-taking process, but they are present to supervise and respond in case of an overdose. Visitors are welcome to stay at the facility for as long as they need.

As well as being a safer drug consumption facility, it also offers other services and help for those visiting. There is so much stigma surrounding drug addiction but addiction is an illness and this facility is working to combat that by helping remove the stigma. There are many other services attached to it to assist those who may be struggling.
The Legal Debate
A safer drug consumption facility is not a new idea. It was first started in Switzerland in 1986 and similar facilities like The Thistle exist in other countries across the world. Even though it’s not a new concept, it still comes with a lot of concerns, especially regarding its legality.
Glasgow’s Joint Integration Board – a body comprising the local NHS and Glasgow City Council that administers health and social care services – first approved plans for the facility in 2016.- BBC
However, to make the facility legal, it was decided that those using it would need to bring their own drugs. This plan while supported in Scotland, did not gain support in England, leading to the reversal of the facility’s development in 2018. The idea was then reintroduced in 2023 and was approved leading to the opening of The Thistle.
Could the U.S. Benefit from Safer Drug Consumption Facilities?
Like many other countries, the United States faces significant drug-related issues. One of the most serious concerns is the opioid crisis, particularly the rise of fentanyl and the increasing prevalence of drugs being laced with it.
Given the severity of this crisis, could the United States benefit from safer drug consumption facilities?
59.277 million or 21.4% of people 12 and over have used illegal drugs or misused prescription drugs within the last year- National Centre for Drug Abuse Statistics
A safer drug consumption room may help more people than one might realize. It has the potential to clean up the streets, provide a safer environment for those struggling with addiction and help to remove the stigma so those who may need help feel more comfortable asking. As this concept is gradually introduced in different parts of the world, it could prove beneficial not only for those in need but also for the broader community, helping to create a safer environment for all.
