There are some stories that are never forgotten. Stories that spark debate, blur the lines of truth and linger in people’s minds. What began as a loving family adopting an orphan in need of a home quickly turned into conflicting narratives and a battle of accusations. The public was left wondering: what is the true story of Natalia Grace? Was she a vulnerable child or an adult mastermind who deceived her way into a family? Hulu’s most recent series, “Good American Family,” offers a dramaticized retelling of the Ukrainian orphan’s adoption and a look into a highly controversial story.

Uncovering the Truth

In 2010, Kristine and Michael Barnett were a married couple living in Hamilton County, Indiana with their three biological sons. Hoping to adopt Natalia Grace, a child with a rare type of dwarfism called diastrophic dysplasia, they welcomed her into their family. Grace had originally entered the United States in 2008, adopted by a couple in New Hampshire before settling in with the Barnetts.

However, as time passed, the couple began to question Grace’s age and true identity. They claimed that she exhibited odd behaviors and displayed physical developments inconsistent and too mature for her supposed age of around nine years old. She also allegedly threatened family members and attempted to harm them. Grace, in turn, accused the Barnetts of abusive behavior. In an interview with People Magazine, she explains she endured beatings with a belt and was pepper-sprayed. Grace, who lives with chronic pain and trauma, said the family twisted her story to resemble the 2009 horror film, “Orphan.”

Following multiple physiological and physical evaluations, the Barnetts petitioned for Grace’s legal birth year to be changed from 2003 to 1989, making her legally 22 years old. Once the change was approved, the Barnetts moved Grace into her own apartment that did not accommodate her disability. While they only paid for the rent, the family moved to Canada, leaving Grace behind.

The Adaptation into “Good American Family”

“Good American Family” dramatizes Grace’s real-life story. It explores the complex events between the Barnetts and Grace. Well-known actress Ellen Pompeo acts as Kristine Barnett and Mark Duplass is Michael Barnett. Natalia Grace is played by Imogen Faith Reid, a 27-year-old actress with a form of dwarfism.

The series attempts to retell the story in a way that captivates audiences, with some arguably exaggerated details and portrayals. While there are many parallels between the show and the true story, certain aspects have been changed for entertainment purposes.

A New Chapter

After the events with the Barnett family, Grace was taken in by Cynthia and Antwon Mans, her neighbors. The Mans sought to reverse the court order and restore her birth date back to 2003. Meanwhile, Kristine and Michael Barnett, now divorced, were faced with neglect charges over their treatment of Grace. However, the charges were eventually dismissed.

Grace later left the Mans household after experiencing abuse. She is now living with friends and studying to earn her high school diploma. In 2023, medical and DNA testing officially confirmed her birth year as 2003. Grace’s full story can be watched in the documentary “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace.”
