To Shave or Not to Shave (and Tips to do it!)

If you are wondering how to shave pubic hair the right way, you’re not alone. There is much curiosity out there when it comes to the hair down there. One TikTok recently asked followers about current pubic hair trends, and, of course, responses were all over the place from jokes like “I put mine in a messy bun so that it’s curly in the morning” and actual tips “waxing gets rid of the hair for longer”.

Now, before we get into the do’s and don’t of how to shave down there correctly, let’s get one thing straight: there is no right or wrong way to wear your pubic hair. If you wish to have it a little more grown, then wear it with confidence. Never let anyone tell you that you must shave. It is your choice and your decision.

Maybe you want to leave it all. Maybe you want it completely bare. Maybe you prefer to trim it from time to time. Waxing may seem like a better alternative if you get those red bumps more easily, but it is expensive and out of reach for many women in our society. Yes, there are products such as Nair, but many find that those don’t actually work and irritate the sensitive skin of the vagina. Either way, shaving your pubic hair is part of your normal routine and experimentation, it is important to know how to do it safely.

Ingrown hairs and angry red skin seem like they may just be part of the shaving package. The bikini line is particularly prone to razor burn because pubic hair is thicker, coarser, and curly, tending to grow back into the skin. So, that quick swipe of your razor may not be the painless alternative you thought it would be. It is time consuming, easily irritated, and hard to keep up with if not done in the correct way. Thankfully, VALLEY has a few tips to ease any confusion.

Invest in a Good Razor

Picking the right razor is the first step to ensuring your bikini line is smooth and red-bump free. Choosing a firm, sturdy razor with soothing strips will make a big difference.

Prep to prevent Ingrown Hairs

Spend about 10 minutes in warm water first. This will help soften the outer layer of your skin, making it easier to remove hair. Then, exfoliate the specific area. Your skin will thank you.

Don’t Skip Shaving Cream

Always make sure that you are shaving with gel or lotion as that decreases the amount of friction, which, in turn, lessens the chances of razor burn. While any shaving cream is better than none, we recommend one that is fragrance and alcohol free due to the sensitive nature of that area.

Moisturize!

Finish your shave with a light moisturizer of your choice to reduce the risk of any irritation,, dry skin, or pimples.
