Over the past few weeks, the news has been flooded with accusations and speculation about former President Donald Trump. Will President Trump turn himself in? What is he being charged with? Who will be backing him up? There is so much unknown, and even more, unfolding in real time…
On Mar. 30, 2023, former President Donald Trump was indicted by a grand jury in New York City. President Trump is the first ex-president to have been charged with a crime, however, this does not prevent him from running in the future. On Tuesday, Apr. 4, 2023, the former president surrendered in Manhattan and appeared in court. The 29-page indictment was unsealed and the contents were shocking. Trump was charged with 34 crimes.
What was in the indictment?
The unsealed 29-page indictment went through all 34 of President Trump’s alleged felonies. There are many moving parts to this case, including several second parties. Here are the main takeaways from the document:
President Trump allegedly falsified business records in an attempt to protect his image leading up to the presidential election in 2016. It is said that for a few years before the election, President Trump orchestrated the scheme which violated election laws. Before and after the election, Trump falsified records to conceal any damaging information and unlawful activity he had taken part in. Within this mess, there are four former lawyers, two women and a doorman, which all add layers to the story.
Everything surrounding the alleged scheme was all an attempt to suppress negative information about then-presidential candidate, Donald Trump. The two women involved claimed to have had sexual encounters with President Trump while he was married; one of the women is adult actress Stormy Daniels. Both women were allegedly paid off to keep quiet on the matter. A doorman who worked at Trump Tower in New York City was also paid off to keep alleged information — that he intended to sell — to himself. The doorman claimed he knew of a child born out of wedlock whose father, he claimed, was President Trump. All three of these stories were not released before the election, and were only revealed after Trump had taken office. Intertwined with these accusations were four lawyers, who were wiring payments and making false invoices and check statements.
President Trump is pleading not guilty to the 34 charges. The next court date is Dec. 4, — only two months before the Republican Party begins their nomination process for the 2024 presidential election. The closeness to the 2024 primaries is also stirrings some controversy.
With so much excitement, and so many updates everyday, many news sources are keeping their sites updated with live up-to-the minute news about Trump. This will be the top of the news for the upcoming weeks.
