Victoria Monét Wins Best New Artist

The 66th annual Grammy Awards recently took place on February 4, 2024. Victoria Monét won Best New Artist despite being in the music industry for 15 years!

The 66th annual Grammy Awards took place on February 4, 2024. The event was hosted by Trevor Noah for the fourth time. This year, there were over 90 different award categories. 

At the Grammys, several records were broken, including; Taylor Swift now holding the record for most Album of the Year wins; Paramore becoming the first rock band led by a woman to win for Best Rock Album; and Boygenius becoming the first all-female band to win Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song. 

And the Award for Best New Artist Goes to…

The nominees for Best New Artist were Coco Jones, Fred again…, Gracie Abrams, Ice Spice, Jelly Roll, Noah Kahan, Victoria Monét and The War and Treaty. Victoria Monét won Best New Artist. 

Additionally, Monét won Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical and Best R&B Album for Jaguar II, which was released on August 25, 2023. This year, she was also nominated for Best R&B Song and Record of the Year for her song “On My Mama.”

Past recipients of Best New Artist include Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, Olivia Rodrigo and Samara Joy.

Who is Victoria Monét?

Monét was born on May 1, 1989, in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2009, she met Ariana Grande, and the pair clicked. She is an accomplished songwriter, she’s written for artists such as Ariana Grande, Chloe x Halle, BLACKPINK, and even Fifth Harmony. Most notably, she collaborated with Grande on her songs “7 Rings” and “Thank U, next”.

She can even be seen in the 7 Rings music video alongside Alexa Luria, Courtney Chipolone, Njomza, and Tayla Parx. The song is about the time that Grande bought her six friends and herself matching rings at Tiffany & Co. For her work on 7 Rings and Thank U, Next, Monét was nominated for Album of the Year and Record of the Year in 2019. She was also nominated for Best R&B Song for the writing credits on the song “Do It”, sung by Chloe x Halle, released in 2020.

Monét attended the awards show alongside her partner, John Gaines, in a coordinating bronze Versace dress with their young daughter, Hazel Monét Gaines. Even though she has been in the music industry for about 15 years, she has remained humble and appreciative of her Grammy wins.

In her speech for Best New Artist, she stated:

I moved to LA in 2009 and I like to liken myself to a plant, who was planted and you can look at the music industry as soil. It can be looked at as dirty or it can be looked at as a source of nutrients and water. My roots have been growing underneath the ground, unseen for so long. I feel like today, I’m sprouting, finally above ground.
