Makeup means something different to everyone. To some, it’s a tool for self-expression, being capable of transforming our appearance and enhancing our confidence. To others, it’s an indomitable, intimidating force to shy away from. Given the amount of beauty trends and techniques in the media today, finding your personal makeup style can often seem like a daunting task.
Maybe you’re one of those people who feel like makeup just doesn’t work on them; maybe there’s a certain look that works so well on your friend but it just doesn’t look as good on you. Maybe you’ve felt discouraged by the notion that makeup is a one-size-fits-all thing.
The beauty of makeup lies in its diversity — offering a spectrum of styles that could suit anyone if you find the right one. According to beauty content company, Dear Peachie, there are eight makeup archetypes that work for different types of facial features: natural, elegant, gamine, ingenue, classic, modern, dramatic and romantic.
Take VALLEY’s quiz to find out which one’s yours! This might be a long quiz and these questions will likely need you to jot down your answers, so strap in, grab a paper and pen … or, you know, your notes app.
PART A – Visual Weight of Facial Features
Here, we’ll look at your overall facial features and how much they impact the overall look of your face. For every question, you will add a certain number of points for the answer you pick.
What is your face shape?
For this, we’re looking at the level of boniness in a face.
Rounded face shapes are more curved, with a general lack of angles in the face. The temple region, cheekbones and jawline tend to have a smooth outline. More angular faces, like square, rectangle or diamond, have sharper edges and more clear lines in the face shape.

Add the corresponding points to your total based on the numbers below:
a. Round, oval or pear-shaped — +1
b. Square, rectangular or diamond — -1
c. Mix of both — 0
What is the ratio of your face?

The face can be divided into three segments — upper, middle and lower thirds. The one we’ll be focusing on is the lower third. This ranges from the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the chin.
If your lower third is:
a. Shorter than the rest of your face — +1
b. Longer than the rest of your face — -1
c. The same length as the rest of your face — 0
What is the size of your eyes?
The amount of space your eyes take up on your face also makes for a large part of how defined your face appears to be.

b. A wide or large eye shape — -1

c. Nose not too low or too high — 0
What is the width of your nose?
According to the golden ratio, your nose should be perfectly aligned with the imaginary line from the inside of your eyebrows to your nostrils (your nose alar). So, in this case, if your nose alar is wider than the inside of your eyebrows, this is a wider nose and vice versa.

a. A wider nose — +1
b. A narrow nose — -1
c. Nose neither wide or narrow — 0
What is the size of your mouth?
Similarly, according to the golden ratio, the ends of the mouth “should” align with the centers of your pupils. If your mouth is wider than this distance, it is considered a larger mouth and vice versa.

PART B – Shape of Your Facial Features
Here, we’ll look at how your specific facial features are shaped to determine their effect on the overall appearance of your face. Once again, for every question, you will add a certain number of points for the answer you pick.
What is your facial structure like?
Here, we’ll look at whether you have a more angular facial structure — more deeply defined cheekbones and jawline — or a rounder facial structure with more fleshiness and curvature.

Here, we’re looking at if your eyes are more rounded or angular! If you have rounder eyes, you might have a wider opening at the inner corner along with higher curvature at the lids. Whereas angular eyes, like siren eyes, have a smaller opening at the inner corner along with a flatter curvature to the lids.

And finally,
What is the shape of your lips?

If you have more plump lips with no visible cupid’s bow, you have round lips. If you do have a cupid’s bow and just generally more defined outlines for your lips, you have angular lips. And as always, if you have neither too round nor too angular lips, you have neutral lips.
So, if you have:
a. Round lips — -1
b. Angular lips — +1
c. Neutral lips — 0
Now, if you have your totals for both Part A and Part B, let’s get your results!

What you want to do now is plot your Part A score on the Y-Axis — as in from up to down. Then, you want to plot your Part B score on the X-Axis, that is, on the horizontal line.
For example, if you have a Part A score of -2 and a Part B score of +3, you will fall under the Modern makeup archetype category! You can read more about what your makeup archetype means and what kind of makeup you should use based on it in one of VALLEY’s upcoming articles!
