Happy Valley has been waaaay too cold lately. We need a trip to a tropical oasis. Specifically to Koh Sumai, Thailand to the White Lotus resort.

It’s been two long years since we took a vacation to a White Lotus resort, but finally, creator Mike White has gifted us with a third season just after the holidays have come to a depressing end. Finally, some TV to look forward to.

Introducing the Elite

I’m sure you remember Belinda, played by Natasha Rothwell, as season one’s resort masseuse. She has made a comeback, not as an employee this time, but as a guest, seeking to gain more knowledge in wellness at this White Lotus location.

Another returning cameo was made by Greg, played by Jon Gries. The once-killer is supposedly rehabilitated, living on a hill on top of the wellness retreat and dating model Chloe, played by Charlotte Le Bon.

Along with the familiar faces, the new characters increase the unease and discomfort to a new level. I’ll try keep it short and sweet.

A new sibling trio has the media buzzing about a hint of an inappropriate relationship between the three. Another trio has also entered the villa, three long-time friends on a girl’s trip with all of the obvious tension and festering animosity to make it a juicy storyline and lastly a miserable boyfriend with his poor, happy go-lucky girlfriend. Buckle up.

Welcome to Thailand

White has given this season more of an Eastern culture and religious vibe, a major difference from the more westernized resorts we’ve stayed at the past two seasons. The first being Maui, Hawaii and the second being Sicily, Italy. We legit took a trip around the world this season.

The Real White Lotus

The beauty doesn’t only lie in the beautiful Eastern Asian retreat, the deeper meaning behind this entertaining series is as deep as it is clever.

Once again, White Lotus uses the series to demonstrate the destructive nature of the wealthy and elite. The overly dramatic, rude and self-centered guests contemplate their superficial problems as they vacation in a place where most of the world cannot afford.

The show sheds a light on the reality of reckless behavior of the ultra-wealthy and their ability to get away with it because of their privileged standing in society plus their bullying nature.

The white lotus flower itself represents purity and enlightenment in Buddhism. Traits that the guests lack but aspire to create an illusion of it with a healthy lifestyle. Watchers find it refreshing to watch the so-called perfect guests crash and burn on their so-called perfect vacation. It’s ironic yet entertaining.
