Why Dan and Blair Made The Most Sense Together in “Gossip Girl”

“Gossip Girl” is the CW’s hit and iconic drama series from the mid 2000s. It captivated the world with its glitz, glamour, drama and of course, relationships. The fan favorite couples like Blair and Chuck are who you most likely think of when looking back on the GG relationships. You probably shake your head when remembering that time the writers seriously tried to make Blair and Dan happen for that brief time during season five. Although we’ve aged and matured since the first time we watched the series, it becomes more apparent that “Dair” might’ve had the potential to be amazing.

Chuck and Blair Were Toxic

Chuck traded Blair for a hotel. Is much more required to say? And that’s not the only time during the series that their relationship was tumultuous. The majority of the time, they were on the outs instead of doing well. He slept with Jenny at the end of season 3, leaving Blair absolutely crushed. There was also even a moment where Chuck got physically violent with her.

In real life, if your best friend was dealing with a relationship anywhere close to as volatile as C and B, you would try to separate them no matter what it takes. It may be easy to romanticize through a screen, but any of these situations would be highly concerning if they occurred outside of the show.

They Had Mutual Interests

Unlike the rest of the nonjudgmental breakfast club, Dan’s interests aligned best with Blair’s. They were both intellectuals who enjoyed art, culture, movies, and writing. During Blair’s moments at NYU, they found moments when they resonated with each other based on a mutual interest in all of those things.

Chuck and Blair were usually more worked up over the most recent issue they were having to have moments where they could bond over mutual interests.

They Learned from Each Other

A subplot that was used to advance both Dan and Blair as characters throughout the series was the idea that they both didn’t understand where the other came from. Dan had a hyperfixation on the Upper East Side and those who grew up there since his time began at Constance Billard. Blair always focused on the fact that Dan was from Brooklyn and almost pitied him because of it. She couldn’t imagine living like Humphrey.

As their friendship and relationship grew, they began to understand each other more and more. Blair grew respect for people from Brooklyn and Dan finally had some of his questions answered about the Upper East Side. Even though they came from different backgrounds, which initially appeared to be one of their biggest differences, actually pushed them to be closer and only learn more about the world.

Undeniable Chemistry

The chemistry between these two is something that was always there. At the start of the series it may have been fueled more by hate than love but it was always there. They were always passionate about one another whether it was positive or negative.

This energy transferred over very well as they decided to step into a romantic relationship. All those moments of harsh glances across the room or battles of insults manifested into an impassioned relationship.

Dan Would Do Anything for Blair

There were multiple times throughout the show that Dan dropped whatever else he was doing, to be there for Blair if necessary. The most iconic example was when Blair needed him after her failed wedding with Louis and he came.

He was the most reliable man that Blair was with from the whole series. Dan was able to take care of Blair in a way that no other guy did, not only just including but especially Chuck.

Dan showed up for her and would’ve continued to if she had chosen him over Chuck.
