Your Drink is an Accessory

Perhaps the most important part of getting ready for the day (or night) is creating your outfit. Of course, this involves choosing what clothes you want to wear, but accessorizing is also an important step that shouldn’t be forgotten; jewelry, headwear and glasses truly tie together your look. We’re all taught that the extent of our outfit is finalized before we head out the door, but you should consider the most underrated accessory — your drink.

No, we’re not telling you to carry around your empty Starbucks cup to all your classes throughout the day. If you think about it, though, your drink shares the benefits that any other accessory has; it tells others a little bit about what you like, it can add a little flavor to your outfit and the ability to be paired with different outfits makes drinks just as versatile as a necklace or scarf. If your drink looks so beautiful, why don’t you join it?

Caffeine Queen

Whether you’re on your way to class or spending a day around town, a little caffeine pit stop probably begins your adventure.

Tried and true, the iced coffee is a longtime favorite of the drink — and accessory — variety. Because this light brown drink is often acquired through a quick stop in the cafe, a classic jeans and white tee matches the go-to, quick drink choice. Additionally, green in your clothing would complement the earth tone of this drink as well.

Match Your Matcha

Having gained popularity in American cafés in recent years, matcha has become a go-to when it’s just not a day for coffee. Matcha-matching is similar to iced coffee: a simple white tee and jeans gives the easygoing, light feel of a stop at the café. One thing is for certain though … matcha is famous for its green color. Adding a pop of light green in your outfit can make the whole look more cohesive, but conversely wearing matcha’s complementary color, magenta, would make the green stand out even more.

Love A Hint of Lavender

Even more recent than matcha is the new lavender latte craze at every cafe (no, Starbucks didn’t start it). As the name suggests, this drink is light purple, perfect for matching with light gray, violet or even a light brown. If you find yourself wearing one of these colors at the coffee shop, why not try this up-and-coming drink choice?

Mimosa Mimicking

At brunch with friends, it’s inevitable that someone will whip out their camera to take some photos. You don’t want to look like you’re blending in with your drink (because we all know you’re using it as a prop for pictures).

Mimosas are the first sip that everyone goes for at a boozy brunch … but how can you be prepared to match this cocktail? To stick with the themes of morning and brightness, go for colors like white, off-white or light pastels. Avoid “orange juice” orange and bright colors like yellow or red, which won’t be easy on the eyes when you’re searching for the perfect photo.

Fit Your Spritz

An Aperol spritz — the bolder, more intense choice for brunch, can follow a different set of rules when you’re planning your outfit. What does this drink say about you? You like the classics, but you don’t undermine the less popular choice (and you wish you were in Italy). Aperol spritzes can be paired with a like-colored orange summery dress, but a deep complementary blue would also make your drink pop against your canvas.

Cute With a Side of Cosmo

Cocktails come in all shapes and colors, so having an idea of what you plan to order tonight is a must if you want to look good behind your drink. Knowing that the evening into night is probably when you’ll see the most people, matching your drink is of the utmost importance (especially if you spill your fifth one on your shirt).

Carrie Bradshaw’s cosmopolitan was her signature drink, and she always knew what to wear to accompany it. If you plan on being a cosmo complement, go for warm colors like raspberry, dark plum or black. Dark colors will make the bright drink pop.

Espresso Expression

Dark and rich, the espresso martini is unlike any other drink we’ve discussed. This almost-black, brown cocktail lets you be the star of the show. It’s deep, bold colors go well with the deep, bold flavor. If you’re a gold girl, this drink is a great choice to really make your jewelry shine too.
