Your Mom was a Teenage Girl Too

My therapist, my personal cheerleader, my gossip bestie: my mom.

Everyone knows the drill: during long walks from class to class, you pull out your phone and gab with your mom … about basically everything. From boy troubles to annoying professors, to your nightmare roommate, she hears it all. Somehow, she gives the most perfect advice, she knows exactly what to say and do. How is everyone’s mom suddenly a high-profile therapist on the walk down Pollock Road?

Her Angsty Teenage Years

It might be hard to believe, but your mother was once a wild teenager, a heartbroken ex-girlfriend and an overwhelmed student. Yet somehow, the thought still sneaks in when tensions rise. We’ve probably all rolled our eyes saying that she doesn’t understand me at all! We’ve all had those “Freaky Friday” moments: screaming and slamming doors, convinced that she just doesn’t get it. But here’s the thing: she probably understands more than you realize.

Shared Struggles

Your moms weren’t always your moms. Before, she was a toddler, teenager and every age in between. She had big dreams and days free of worry or stress. She got her heart broken.

No matter how long in between, there will always be shared struggles that are timeless. The anxiety of a GPA-destroying test, worries about fitting in and unrequited love are all universal rites of passage. In these moments you and your mom are connected. Your mom understands these timeless feelings and can give you some great advice. She went through the same things!

Reflections of Who You Are

In some ways, you and your mom are reflections of the same story. Fashion trends and technology may change, but the heart of the experience will stay the same.

When you look at your mom you can see everything you can become, growing from a young girl to a powerful woman with friends, family (and an amazing daughter). Your mom sees a glimpse of her younger self, all of her hopes and dreams, in a place where it is all possible. So, next time your mom gives you advice, remember that she is an expert.
